Gautam Gambhir press conference: We got feedback from the dressing room; New Indian team coach reacts after Hardik Pandya loses Indian T20 team captaincy

In a surprising turn of events, the Indian cricket team selectors, chaired by Ajit Agarkar, along with head coach Gautam Gambhir, have announced Suryakumar Yadav as the new captain of the T20 team. The move marks a significant change in the team’s leadership, with Yadav replacing the seasoned Rohit Sharma who resigned after India’s recent T20 triumph in the West Indies.

Ajit Agarkar, speaking at the press conference, highlighted the reason behind the bold decision, saying, “Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed captain because he is one of the most deserving candidates. We have received positive feedback from the dressing room. He has great cricket sense, is one of the best T20 batsmen in the world and is likely to play in every game.”

Agarkar also spoke about the selection process, stressing the importance of consistency and availability, especially in the case of all-rounder Hardik Pandya. “Hardik is a very important player. He has rare and hard-to-find skills. However, his fitness has been a challenge. Therefore, our decision to prioritise availability for selection has been crucial. Surya has the leadership qualities to flourish as a captain,” Agarkar explained.

Gautam Gambhir echoed these sentiments, adding, “The appointment of Suryakumar Yadav as captain is a testament to his dedication and understanding of the game. His leadership on the field and ability to inspire his teammates were decisive factors in our decision-making process.” The announcement has sparked discussions among cricket fans and analysts, with opinions divided on whether Yadav, despite his cricketing prowess, has enough experience as a captain at the international level.

On former vice-captain KL Rahul being overlooked, he retorted, “I was not there when KL was replaced.” The T20 series against Sri Lanka will begin on July 27, followed by matches on July 28 and 30. All the matches will be played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. Suryakumar Yadav will lead a 15-member T20 team in all three matches. After that, the ODIs will be played on August 2, 4 and 7 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
