Scenes from Karipur Airport

Karipur: The cancellation of two Air Arabia flights without warning led passengers to stage a protest at Karipur airport in Kozhikode.

Seven flights that landed in Karipur on Sunday morning were diverted due to bad weather. Of these, the Air Arabia Abu Dhabi flight was diverted to Cochin International Airport and the Sharjah flight was diverted to Coimbatore. Due to the favourable weather conditions, both the flights returned to Karipur between 9 and 10 am, but the pilots were not ready to fly after that as the working hours were over. The return journey of two flights thus became uncertain.

Passengers reached Karipur before 1 am to board these flights. The airline officials had initially informed us that the flight would depart at 4.10 am. Later, they were informed that the flight would depart at 8.45 am, but the flight was later cancelled, one of the passengers said. This caused an uproar among the passengers. Some protested by blocking the way of the airline staff. The security personnel arrived and calmed the passengers.

There were 360 passengers on two flights. The passengers complained that they were kept at the airport for over 10 hours and were not even provided with food. Two IndiGo and Air India Express flights and a Spice Jet flight were also diverted. After the weather conditions became favourable, the planes returned and the service resumed.
