Online Shopper Shares Disturbing Message After Browsing Popular Brand’s Jewelry Selection: ‘I Canceled Order’

You can easily determine what’s in your food by reading the nutrition label, but what about clothes and accessories?

In a widely shared video, TikToker Chas (@_styledbychas) discussed a concerning discovery when ordering jewelry from Shein. “If you’ve ever tried to order jewelry, this warning sign pops up that says DEHP is a major concern.”

@_styledbychas @shein_official is it toxic??? A warning can kill your mood!!!!! I did a little research and saw what I found out!!! #shein #toxic #lead #greenscreen #talkshow ♬ original sound – _styledbychas

Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate is a synthetic, colorless, and nearly odorless chemical used to produce soft plastics, classified in the family of chemicals called phthalates. As the narrator points out, DEHP can be carcinogenic and cause endocrine, reproductive, and fetal development problems.

California is the only state with regulations on DEHP, listing it under Proposition 65 and requiring brands to warn consumers of levels above 0.1% and their potential health effects.

After researching DEHP, Chas discovered that Shein jewelry was only toxic if put in the mouth. However, she also learned that the brand’s clothing was high in lead, so she suggested ordering less Shein products and washing clothes before wearing them.

Cheaper materials like lead, phthalates, and polyester are more cost-effective for mass production in the fast fashion industry. In fact, clothing manufacturers need about 430 million barrels of oil per year to meet their demand for polyester.

Unfortunately, fast fashion pieces rarely last long, with the average consumer buying 68 items of clothing per year, and replacing them is expensive. This results in large amounts of landfill waste and chemicals being released.

Brands have a vested interest in prioritizing sustainability and public health. Plastek Group reports that nearly 80% of consumers prefer to buy products from environmentally friendly brands.

Another study indicates that 82% of consumers are willing to pay more for sustainably packaged products, up from 78% in 2022. Overall, a product’s environmental footprint is now a crucial part of purchasing decisions.

Commenters were shocked and upset by the video.

“GIRL I literally wrote a post yesterday about how much I hate these types of stores and the people who defend them,” one user said.

“This sign appears on children’s clothing and all swimwear. I just went to check out and all these warning labels appeared. I cancelled the order,” wrote another.

One commenter warned: “It’s not just SHEIN. Even hair products at 99 cent stores have this warning.”

Surprisingly, one user commented a similar warning about her mother’s authentic Yves Saint Laurent handbag, stating that high-quality fashion is also broken.
