Good neighbors are neighbors you could count on, in the past, to lend you a cup of sugar or, these days, to return lost packages to their rightful owners.

However, the man’s quest to recover his package did not go as planned when after numerous attempts, the situation became explosive.

Find out how it all went down.

AITA for knocking on a neighbor’s door and expecting an answer?

A few days ago, I recently realized that I had not received the package I was expecting.

I checked the tracking information and saw that it was delivered a week ago to the person with my apartment number in the other building in my apartment complex.

This should be easy enough to recover, right?

So I went to the other building around 6pm, made sure I was in the right place thanks to the photo the delivery guy took and knocked on the door. No answer.

It’s okay. I figured they must be out, so I decided to come back the next day.

Fake.

The next day, still no response.

Then on the third day, I hear the television inside the apartment. Aha!

He’s waiting for an answer this time.

So I knock on the door and… nothing. No answer.

I wait a few minutes, then knock on the door again.

He tries to justify the lack of response.

I guess maybe they were doing something, or maybe they weren’t dressed appropriately to answer the door. Still no answer.

I wait a few minutes and knock again. This lasts maybe 10 minutes or so. Admittedly, at this point I was already annoyed at being completely ignored and having had to spend several days on this issue.

Then the situation gets worse.

So after knocking on the door for the fourth or fifth time, I suddenly hear a woman yelling at me from inside, “IF YOU TOUCH MY FUCKING DOOR, I’M CALL 911.”

But he has a good reason.

I try to explain to her that I had a package delivered to her apartment, to which she yelled, “I NEVER GOT YOUR FUCKING PACKAGE! NOW LEAVE OR I’LL CALL THE COPS!!”

I told her I had a picture of the package delivered to her door. She paused, then started yelling again that I was scaring her and that she was calling the police.

He tries other means of healing.

I said okay, go ahead and tell them a neighbor is knocking on his door looking for a package and see what 911 has to say about it. I left and went to the office to explain the situation.

The office emailed her, along with my picture of the package, and she said she had received the package, but had asked her boyfriend to drop it off in the mail room right next to their elevator. (That’s not where packages go, because it’s not secure. There’s a parcel room about 50 feet away where he could have delivered it instead, or dropped it off at the office about 75 feet away.)

The situation is now a given.

Unsurprisingly, my package was gone by then, having been stolen or thrown away.

So my question is: AITA to knock and wait for a response?

What a frustrating ordeal.

The outside world is scary, but it’s sad that you can’t even trust your neighbors.

He’s not going to ask that neighbor for a cup of sugar anytime soon.
