“Don’t put yourself in jail” – LP warns self-proclaimed president Okafor

The Labour Party (LP) has issued a stern warning to the party’s self-proclaimed National Chairman, Callistus Okafor, against wilful incarceration for contempt of court.

LP National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, issued the warning on Friday in Abuja while reacting to Okafor’s claim to the presidency.

DAILY POST reports that Okafor had, at a press conference earlier in the day, claimed to be part of the 2014 National Convention of the Labour Party and had “unilaterally declared” himself the National Chairman of the party.

Ifoh said: “This latest development comes after the judgment of a Federal High Court in Abuja which recently validated the Nnewi Convention of the Labour Party which produced a new set of leaders led by Barrister Julius Abure as the National Chairman.

“We want to make it clear that Callistus Okafor could pass for a playwright who chooses to dance in front of the gallery and entertain people.

“We really don’t know who is drumming for this former party member, even after two successful national conventions have been held and the party has since evolved far beyond his imagination.

“Nigerians will recall that Mr. Callistus Okafor also contested in 2021 when he declared himself the National Chairman of the party and approached the court and failed both in the High Court and the Court of Appeal.

“The Court of Appeal clearly held that Callistus Okafor could not use the consent decree to have himself appointed national chairman of the Labour Party.

“In fact, the court reprimanded him and dismissed his complaint with substantial costs, which he has not yet paid to this day.

“We are rather shocked and surprised that the same Okafor is present again, going against the decision of the Court of Appeal.”
