Here are more photos of Vice President Kamala Harris and President Biden at Andrews Air Force Base last night. They were greeting Evan Gershkovich, Alsu Kurmasheva, and Paul Whelan, three American citizens released from Russian prisons in a historic prisoner swap. The Biden administration has been working for two years to free Whelan, Gershovich (a WSJ reporter), and Kurmasheva. These photos represent a watershed moment for the Biden administration and for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Kamala Harris’ energy since Biden endorsed her as his replacement for the Democratic presidential nominee less than two weeks ago. Vice President Harris has traveled the country, speaking at events, holding campaign rallies, meeting with visiting dignitaries, and running a nimble national campaign. Oh, and she also raised a historic amount of campaign money in July:

Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign announced Friday that it raised $310 million last month, a staggering sum that shows donors who once seemed spooked by the prospects of President Joe Biden’s November election are now pouring mountains of cash into his former No. 2.

The revenues of Harris, the Democratic National Committee and affiliated entities far exceeded those of former Republican President Donald Trump, whose campaign and various committees reported raising $138.7 million for the month of July.

The vice president’s campaign also said it entered August with $377 million in cash on hand, which it said was the most for a presidential candidate at this point in the cycle. It was also well above the $327 million that Trump’s campaign had said it would have on hand to start the month.

“The huge outpouring of support we’ve seen in such a short period of time clearly shows that the Harris coalition is mobilized, growing, and ready to work to defeat Trump in November,” Julie Chavez Rodriguez, Harris’ campaign manager, said in a statement. “Our money is going to efforts that win close elections.”

For what it’s worth, I donated to the Biden campaign during those weeks when Democratic defectors were furiously briefing Washington reporters about their plans to stab Biden in the back. I don’t think I was alone in that—when some Democrats saw how the party was betraying him, they donated, and that campaign money now belongs to Kamala Harris. As it should. I also donated when she became the nominee. I also like that the Harris campaign is already spending money. They quickly bought ads on NBC during the Olympics, scheduled during the live broadcast of gymnastics (arguably the most-watched event in the United States).

More Kamala news… the running mate hunt continues and the most likely candidates are canceling their weekend plans to be by the phone in case Kamala calls. There are already jokes that Kamala is having a rose ceremony to pick her VP. While there is plenty of evidence that Harris has chosen Pennsylvania Gov. Shapiro, the fact that so many other candidates on the short list are canceling their plans makes me think that Harris is keeping her head down and that no one outside her inner circle knows who she picked (please, let it be Tim Walz).

Vanity Fair also points out another piece of good news for Harris’ campaign: Her campaign is now being covered by celebrity accounts and blogs like Pop Crave, The Shade Room, and Hollywood Unlocked. The fact that one of her first major campaign rallies featured Megan Thee Stallion dancing and performing probably helps keep bodybuilders interested in politics.
