Artist Banksy has confirmed he is behind a new artwork depicting two pelicans above a fish and chip shop in north-east London.

The birds are depicted in silhouette, fishing, above the shop on the corner of Pretoria Avenue and Northcote Road in Walthamstow. It is the fifth London image that Banksy has confirmed as his work this week.

A goat appeared at Kew on Monday while an image of two elephants touching trunks in Chelsea was seen for the first time on Tuesday, although on Friday it was seen disfigured by scratches.

Three monkeys hanging from a Brick Lane bridge drew crowds on Wednesday, and a wolf howling at a satellite dish was spotted in Peckham on Thursday – and hours later it was thought to have been stolen.

A local resident told BBC News: “It’s really exciting.

“A friend messaged me early this morning to say he had appeared on my street, so we agreed to come over as soon as possible.”

She added: “It’s so fun and wholesome, so that’s what’s really nice to see.”

She said the location of the artwork above Bonners Fish Bar was significant. “It’s kind of an icon of the area so I’m sure that’s why it was chosen. It’s been there a long time and it’s very well-loved.”

Another local, Hannah, said she joined the other spectators as soon as she heard about the work.

“I was lying in bed, scrolling through social media, and this information came up.”

She added: “I said ‘come on kids, put your coats on, we’re going to go out and see the new Banksy on Bonners’.

“We live just a few doors down, so it’s very exciting.”

On Thursday, the Bristol-based artist released a image on Instagram of the silhouette of a wolf howling on a satellite dish in Rye Lane, Peckham, south London.

It was later deleted, with a video appearing to show two people using a ladder to lower it and carry it onto the road.

Two elephants appeared to be reaching out to each other with their trunks on the side of a house in Chelsea on Tuesday.

The Metropolitan Police said they were called following reports of a “stolen satellite dish containing artwork”, but no arrests have been made.

The BBC understands that the series of artworks is expected to continue in the coming days.
