APPLE fans can take advantage of a feature built into their iPhones designed to improve focus or help promote a better night’s sleep.

The Background Sounds tool was introduced with the advent of iOS 15, but it remains one of the iPhone’s best-kept secrets.

The “built-in background noise,” whether it’s the lapping of waves or the pounding of rain, is designed to help users fall and stay sleep.

Apple says the feature can also be used to mask “unwanted environmental noise” while working or studying.

“Who would have thought? I wouldn’t have thought,” wrote one Reddit user.

“That’s pretty cool. I wish I had learned about it sooner because I’m currently staying in a hotel for business for a week now, and I have very noisy neighbors.

To take full advantage of the feature, simply activate it in a few clicks.

Go to Settings and tap Accessibility. Select Audio & Visual, then Background Sounds and turn them on.

To quickly access the options menu, search for Background Sounds in the gray search bar at the top of the Settings panel.

When you choose a sound, the audio file is downloaded directly to your device. Some options include water sounds like the ocean, rain, or a stream.

Alternatively, you can opt for Dark Noise or Bright Noise, two musical pieces with a heavy synthesizer content.

Make further changes to the listening experience by dragging the slider to adjust the volume.

The “Use when media is playing” setting allows you to play background audio below music or videos.

You can also choose to stop the sound once your iPhone is locked.

Once enabled, background sounds will be added to the hearing section of the Control Center. You can enable it by tapping the gray ear icon.

Fans of this hidden feature have touted its many uses, with one dubbing it “Apple“Built-in white noise generator”.

Several users have noticed that they stumbled upon it by accident and were surprised to find it “buried” in the accessibility settings.

“I actually use background sounds to help sleep “Because I can’t sleep in silence,” wrote one Redditor.

“I use it in a camper van, I’m used to it sleep with a fan at home!” exclaimed another.

Others shared that they were counting on this feature to compensate for the inconveniences of some Apple products.

“I use this all the time when I study in cafes,” wrote one user.

“Ever since they removed noise canceling from the AirPods Pro, I’ve been playing rain under my Spotify music to drown out the background noise.”

iPhone Tips to Try Today

Here are some of the best…

  • Input cursor – While typing, hold down the space bar to turn your keyboard into a touchpad, allowing you to move around words and sentences more easily
  • Close all Safari tabs – To do it in one go, just hold the overlapping squares in the bottom right corner and tap close all tabs
  • Quickly delete many photos – Touch and hold a photo, then swipe diagonally in Photos to select multiple images at once, then tap Delete
  • Convert currencies quickly – Swipe down from the top of your home screen, then tap the bar and enter a currency (like €200) and it will automatically convert to your local currency
  • Check if you need to perform a battery upgrade – Smartphone batteries degrade over time. Simply go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and check the maximum capacity. Typically, a battery is considered worn out when its capacity is below 80%. If you’re below that, you can purchase a replacement battery from Apple
  • Move apps faster – Hold down an app until it starts to wiggle, then (while still holding it) tap other apps, which makes them stack so you can move them around more easily
