Wrexham AFC have paid tribute to their oldest fan after he died aged 100.

Arthur Massey starred in the third season of hit Disney+ series Welcome to Wrexham, in which he called the club his “idol” and revealed the first match he attended was when he was seven years old in 1931.

“There were no stands, nothing, just The Turf pub,” he said on the show.

Describing himself as a “Wrexham boy at heart”, he was seen planning his 100th birthday with his family.

His death was announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, by his daughter Julie Birrell who posted a photo of her father with the caption: “14/3/24 – 8/8/24. RIP Dad.”

Next to his words was a broken heart emoji.

The club reposted their message, saying: “Everyone at Wrexham AFC is extremely saddened to learn of the passing of long-time supporter Arthur Massey at the age of 100.”

“Our thoughts are with Arthur’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“I am a Wrexham supporter forever.”

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney, who owns the Red Dragons with Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, said: “What a beautiful man. Thank you for sharing him with the world.

“I give all my love to your whole family.”

“He lived a full life. He was a great man.

“I love you and your family.”

In 2002 Arthur met King Charles when he visited the ground with Queen Camilla as part of a visit to celebrate Wrexham’s new town status.

News of his death comes as Wrexham prepare for their first game in League One on Saturday. They were promoted in April.
