The show took place at KOKO in London last night (August 14), as the singer-songwriter took to the stage for a last-minute surprise set.

Halsey, who uses she/them pronouns, had announced the intimate show days in advance, sharing a tweet that read, “I’m in London and I have a surprise planned for Wednesday. I’m feeling sooooo nostalgic about it.” The update also included a link to a phone number that fans could text to receive updates.

Now, heading to the venue for the first time since promoting her 2015 album ‘Badlands’, Halsey used the one-off concert to debut a brand new song.

Titled “Ego,” the performance came shortly before Halsey wrapped up her set with covers of “Experiment On Me” and “Without Me.” It also came shortly after the singer used her Sziget festival set to drop a new rock-inspired song.

“I’ve been teasing a new song for the last few days. You’re the first in the world to hear it… quietly, even before some of the people who work for the label,” the singer told the crowd before launching into the song.

“After the Budapest festival, they said to me: ‘Hey, we’re not crazy… what the hell was that?’ I said: ‘Have you met me before? Doesn’t that sound like me?’ No, what you get is what you get.

“This song is coming out tomorrow night, how exciting is that? How many of you listened to me and thought, ‘She’s definitely going to play this new song’? You think you’re so smart,” she continued. “I’m always one step ahead… You want to hear a new, different song? This is a new, new thing.”

The band then launched into a rhythmic acoustic guitar riff, with Halsey delivering vulnerable, pop-punk-inspired lyrics about hiding deep-rooted sadness. The album also feels more pop-inspired than their last album, “If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power.”

I’m caught in a daily trend / Tied to an invisible thread / Walking on razors, I’ve been sharp / And I wake up tired, I think I’d be better off dead,” Halsey sings in the opening lines, before the song hits the explosive chorus.

I think I should try to kill my ego / ‘Cause if I don’t, my ego might kill me / I’m a grown-up but lately / I’ve been acting like a fucking baby / I’m really not as happy as I look.

As previously mentioned, the new song Halsey performed in London follows the live debut of another track that made its way into their Sziget Festival setlist.

The song was played on the sound system between Halsey’s main show and encore at the Budapest Festival on August 8, with the singer reportedly saying, “For every Halsey pop song, there’s a Halsey rock song. I feel like I should be able to do both.”

It was also at the same Hungarian festival that the singer performed her latest single, the Britney Spears sample, “Lucky,” for the first time. She recently said she was “very nervous” about using the sample in the song, and that she had “shared everything” with the singer throughout the creative process.

This came after Spears appeared to claim she felt “harassed, violated and intimidated” by their new video.

In a since-deleted post, Spears threatened legal action against Halsey and called her “downright cruel,” however, she later walked back her statement on X/Twitter, writing, “Fake news!!! That wasn’t me on my phone!!! I love Halsey and that’s why I deleted it!!!”

In response, Halsey said, “I love Britney!!! You have always been and always will be the first person to make me understand what it means to be inspired. And you continue to inspire me every day.”

Halsey also hinted that their new album would be “all over the place” and “full of experimentation,” and opened up about their “complex feelings” after suffering a miscarriage during a concert in 2015.
