Woman on TikTok reveals how American Airlines refunded her for giving up her seat, social media users weigh in

A woman trying to return home from her Italian holiday has told how an airline compensated her after her flights were overbooked, prompting social media users to weigh in with their opinions.

Susan Berry is a 36-year-old freelance fashion photographer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who recently spent two months in Italy for work.

Berry said she was able to spend three extra nights in Naples, Italy, after her flights were sold out.

“I went to the airport and the American Airlines manager said, ‘Hey, we’re overbooked (and) we’re looking for volunteers to stay. You get $1,200 in vouchers, a four-star hotel, all meals,’ and before he could finish his sentence, I said, ‘I will,’” she said of the credit she received for the first overbooked flight.

Although Berry said she was initially eager to return home, she wasn’t “prepared enough to turn down $1,200 in travel vouchers” for her next adventure.

Berry said she and eight other passengers – who also had to stay an extra night – were then transported to a hotel just outside Naples.

She said: “Everyone was kind of… forced to stay, and so I was the only one who was motivated and rallying the troops.”

Berry decided to document her experience in TikTok videos, one of which now has over 1.4 million views. She called the experience “Camp American Airlines” — she said it felt like she was at a day camp with strangers.

She said the hotel the airline put them up in was nicer than the one she had stayed in Italy, and the free three-course dinner at the hotel had made her “thrilled” to be there for an extra day.

The next day, however, the group of stranded passengers was taken back to the airport to catch the next flight to Philadelphia.

“So I show up ready to get on this flight because I’m going home that day,” she said. “But then when I get there, I hear the director again say, ‘Oh, we’re overloaded, (and) we need a volunteer.’”

Berry said after hearing the airline was offering $1,200 vouchers to stay overnight again, she was more than happy to continue her vacation.

She said: “At that point I started to realise… I think they were overbooked for a while and I heard that was the case, so that’s when I started to think… I could do this forever – a few days and build up some good vouchers.”

Social media users have weighed in on her viral TikTok video detailing how many travel vouchers she could potentially earn by pursuing the extension – with most advising her to do so.

Another agreed, saying, “Well, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Some users, however, advised Berry to proceed with caution.

“Do they expire? That would be my problem,” one TikTok user commented.

Another said: “Wait for cash rather than vouchers.”

Naples, Italy

American Airlines’ “Conditions of Carriage,” emailed to Fox News Digital by an airline representative, states: “We will ask passengers who are willing to voluntarily give up their seats in exchange for compensation in the amount and form to be determined solely at American’s discretion.”

“When you volunteer to give up your confirmed seat on a flight, we will compensate you in a form and amount we deem fair,” the terms, also listed on American Airlines’ website, continue.

Berry said that after her second night at the hotel, she found herself back at the airport for the third time — and employees couldn’t help but laugh.

“So this time, yes, everyone at the airport knows me,” she told Fox News Digital, adding that airport workers said, “You’re the only person we’ve ever seen so excited to stay put.”

“At that point, I was just the leader of the pack,” she said.

Berry picked up a $1,150 voucher for his third night of volunteering, but his luck ran out on the fourth day.

“To be honest, I’m pretty sure American Airlines found out about what I was doing because of the whole TikTok thing,” Berry said of her now-viral video.

Berry said that at the end of the trip, she was left with $3,550 in travel credits from the airline.

When asked if she would do it again, Berry said, “I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

Berry said she wasn’t in a hurry to get home on a specific date, so she felt like she was doing a good deed for someone who had to get home at a certain time.

“I have all the time in the world right now,” she joked.

As for how she’ll use her credits, Berry said she’s considering booking tropical destinations like Rio, the Caribbean and Hawaii, as they’d be great places to photograph.
