The Goldorak UFO robot Tissot PRX Powermatic 80

The Goldorak UFO robot Tissot PRX Powermatic 80

This isn’t the first time that 1970s pop culture has come to life on a watch face, and it probably won’t be the last. There’s something appealing about icons of the past, and reviving them in relation to watches is a common practice. One such watch that has undergone this type of makeover is the Tissot PRX Powermatic 80. Originally born in the 1970s as the PRX, it was relaunched to great acclaim just a few years ago. This was at the height of the luxury sports watch craze, and thus was born the Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 collection, an affordable and overall very well-made alternative.

Today, Tissot’s 1970s star collides with another icon of that era: the Grendizer UFO robot! The Grendizer UFO robot is a Japanese manga series and an anime television series created by Go Nagai. The story revolves around Crown Prince Duke Fleed who flees his home planet after the inhabitants of the planet Vega invade it. He does so aboard the Grendizer, a giant mecha robot, and ends up on Earth. The series first aired on Japanese television in 1975 and ran for 74 episodes. In Europe, it was especially successful in France and Italy, where it is known as Goldorak. After almost 50 years, the Grendizer robot now finds its way onto the dial of the Tissot PRX collection.

Housed in the famous 40mm wide stainless steel case, the bust of the robot warrior Goldorak is illustrated on the deep blue dial with a Super-LumiNova outline. In daylight, it is quite discreet as the blue outline closely matches the tone of the dial. In low light situations, however, a bright yellow outline appears, showing the iconic Japanese figurine. The markers surrounding the Goldorak image, as well as the hands, have green Super-LumiNova inserts for contrast. Finishing touches on the front include an inscription in the angled rim that surrounds the dial.

Turning the watch over also reveals the special rotor of this unique version of the PRX. It still powers the Powermatic 80 movement for a runtime of 80 hours, but it is now decorated with a second image of Goldorak and the inscription “Tissot x Goldorak”.

Otherwise, it’s familiar territory. As mentioned before, the case measures 40 mm wide and 10.9 mm high. The lug-to-lug dimension is 51 mm due to the first non-articulated link of the integrated bracelet. This can easily be swapped out for any of Tissot’s rubber or leather straps, thanks to the integrated quick-release pusher system. With a water resistance of 100 m, the PRX is also a great poolside companion!

The Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 40mm Grendizer Special Edition is not limited in number and will retail for CHF 795 Or 895 eurosVAT included. It also comes in a special box covered with images from the Goldorak TV series.
