A special court in Kolkata on Thursday allowed the CBI to conduct a polygraph test on former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and four other doctors in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate intern at the hospital, officials said.

The CBI has taken Ghosh and four other doctors, who were on duty on the day of the August 9 incident, before a special court seeking its permission to conduct the lie detector test on them, they said.

The lie detector test can only be carried out with the permission of the court and the consent of the suspect, they said.

The CBI’s request was accepted by the special court. The agency also asked that the main accused, Sanjay Roy, be subjected to a polygraph test.

Earlier in the day, the CBI alleged before the Supreme Court that the local police tried to cover up the rape and murder of the graduate doctor as the crime scene had been changed by the time the federal agency took over the investigation.

The rape and murder of a young doctor in a hospital seminar room has sparked widespread protests.

The doctor’s body, with serious injuries, was found in the seminar room of the hospital’s thoracic ward on the morning of August 9. A civic volunteer of the Kolkata Police was arrested the next day.

On August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation from the Calcutta police to the CBI, which began its probe on August 14.
