Who will be the surprise guest at the DNC? Internet users guess it will be Beyoncé and Taylor

The buzzy Democratic National Convention wraps up Thursday night with expected appearances from Pink, the (former) Dixie Chicks and celebrity host Kerry Washington. But after a surprise appearance from Oprah Winfrey Wednesday night and internet rumors that there might be a free-for-all on the show, speculation about the possibility of an even bigger surprise guest is running rampant online.

Beyoncé’s song “Freedom” has become the fight song of the Harris-Walz campaign and the anthem of Vice President Kamala Harris. Many have speculated since Harris was nominated that the Grammy Award-winning cultural icon might take the stage at the convention center to sing and publicly endorse the vice president, perhaps just before or after Harris’ speech.

The convention band was also heard rehearsing Beyoncé tunes on Thursday, as Democratic Rep. Fentrice Driskell said:

Swift fans have been calling for an appearance by Taylor Swift, who just wrapped up the European leg of her tour earlier this week. Swift has occasionally weighed in on politics in the past, even endorsing the Biden-Harris ticket ahead of the 2020 election. Betting markets have also pointed to Swift as the most likely possibility, though the woman who called Harris a “brat,” Charli XCX, comes in a close second.

She did, however, release a statement this week acknowledging the cancellation of her Vienna concerts due to serious terrorist threats, saying she “will not speak publicly about something that I believe might provoke those who would want to harm the fans who come to my concerts.” Although she has apparently returned safely to the United States and her tour is over, she may be cautious about her political statements at this time.

Others have speculated that a prominent Republican could still be announced as a surprise speaker Thursday night, with Sen. Mitt Romney and even former President George W. Bush frequently being floated as possibilities. Several other Republicans have taken the stage at this year’s DNC, but the 43rd president’s appearance would be the most notable endorsement yet. Bush has been notably silent on his opinion of former President and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

A performance by Pink is confirmed, and she was spotted rehearsing at the United Center on Thursday afternoon. The Chicks are set to perform the national anthem on Thursday night. They were also spotted rehearsing at the convention center on Thursday.

Among the more humorous suggestions from special guests circulating on social media: Australian Olympic breakdance artist Raygun and Anthony Hopkins, to troll Donald Trump by repeatedly referring to “the late, great Hannibal Lecter.”
