After ten long years, we finally have a new Might and Magic game.

After ten long years, we finally have a new Might and Magic game.

If there’s one strategy game series that everyone has heard of, it’s Civilization. If there’s another, it’s Total War. But maybe you also remember Heroes of Might and Magic. Whether by chance or because you’re a die-hard fan, the strategy game series has carved itself into history, but has struggled to maintain its status among the greats in recent times. After nearly a decade of silence following the mixed reception of Might and Magic Heroes 7, the series has remained relatively quiet – until now. At Gamescom 2024, Ubisoft just announced Heroes of Might and Magic: The Age of Olda brand new title that takes us back to Enroth.

Our adventure begins with a new quest that takes us to the mysterious continent of Jadame, a name you’ve probably heard before in the strategy game series. It’s a vibrant world ripe for castle building and epic battles, with a few extra twists for new fans and veterans alike.

The first in a long list of features is the ability to edit the map and campaign of Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era. Yes, you have creative freedom over this beautiful fantasy world, allowing you to customize your adventure and share it with others.

Next up, developer Unfrozen has confirmed six playable factions; some are completely new, while others are familiar. There’s the Temple, which is made up of the classic knights; the Necropolis, which includes the undead and vampires (my favorites); the Sylvan, which encompasses the Forces of Nature and the Fae, dark elves, and subterranean creatures of the Dungeon; and then the Hive, which revolves around demons and insects. Of course, there are only five, with the sixth remaining a mystery for now.

Additionally, you get to choose from three different modes: single-player, co-op, and multiplayer, each with their own unique queues. Cards are also randomly assigned, which should keep things a little fresher.

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era is the first game in the series to launch in Early Access on Steam. Unfortunately, we don’t have a release date yet, but keep your eyes peeled on the official Steam page for more information.

While the Civilization 7 release date is certainly a highlight of Gamescom 2024 for many, I’m just as excited to see what’s coming out of this new and improved Heroes of Might and Magic. It may be a while before you know it, so we’ve got a list of all the best turn-based strategy games to keep you busy, or failing that, a look at some incredible fantasy games.
