Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told MSNBC on Thursday that Democrats’ November election battle against Donald Trump is comparable to the United States’ war with England for independence.

Nancy Pelosi was interviewed by MSNBC anchor Andrea Mitchell as the Democratic National Convention entered its fourth and final day in Chicago. Many speakers at the Democratic National Convention have focused on attacks on Trump, calling him a “threat to democracy,” and Pelosi repeated that rhetoric during her interview Thursday morning.

“We must defeat an individual who poses a threat to our democracy of a kind we have never seen before,” Pelosi said. “In the early days of our country, Thomas Paine said, ‘The times have found us – declare war, establish a new nation.’ Abraham Lincoln took up that responsibility to hold our country together years later, decades later.”

“And now is the time to save our democracy,” she added. “That’s what we’re here for.”

Trump’s campaign responded to Pelosi’s comments by calling them “deranged.”

“Democrats are now openly hinting at political violence if President Trump wins,” the Trump campaign wrote on X.

Five years ago, Pelosi quoted Thomas Paine’s phrase, “Time has found us,” in reference to Trump. In 2019, Pelosi shared a photo of herself standing and pointing at Trump during a White House meeting between Democratic leaders and the Trump administration.

“In the darkest hours of the American Revolution, Thomas Paine wrote, ‘Time has found us.’ Time has found us today to fight for our democracy,” Pelosi said at the time. “We owe it to our children; we owe it to the generations of Americans who fought and died to defend this country.”

Vice President Kamala Harris will formally accept her party’s nomination and address Democrats Thursday night to conclude the convention. Pelosi is believed to have played a crucial role in pushing President Joe Biden to end his 2024 campaign and nominate Harris as his new nominee.

“Sometimes you have to take a hit for the kids. I did what I had to do,” she said earlier this week when asked about Biden’s withdrawal from the race and her relationship with him. “My concern was not about the president, but about his campaign.”
