Authorities say several women scattered bugs on a breakfast table at the Chicago rally

Chicago police and the FBI are investigating an incident in which several women spread maggots on a breakfast table at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago earlier this week. Authorities believe the individuals were trying to send a political message using the insects.

The four-day event ended Thursday night with Vice President Kamala Harris accepting the party’s nomination to run in the Nov. 5 presidential election.

On Wednesday, several US media outlets reported that the maggot incident took place at the Fairmont Hotel, which was hosting Democratic delegates from Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, Missouri and South Dakota.

WGN-TV quoted authorities as saying that “Several unknown females allegedly entered a building… and began placing unknown objects on tables containing food. The offenders then allegedly left the premises.”

Although it is unclear whether any of the delegates consumed food before the maggots were discovered, “A victim was treated and released on the spot,” according to the statement.

An FBI response team van was spotted outside the scene of the incident Wednesday morning. According to media reports, no arrests have been made so far in connection with the incident.

Indiana Delegate Bryan Lilienkamp told reporters he was “I was a few minutes late so I didn’t see what happened, but those I spoke to said the hotel staff responded extremely quickly. They cleared everything away and brought new dishes,” he said.

WGN-TV quoted Fairmont spokeswoman Haley Robles as saying: “We can confirm that a group of individuals disrupted a DNC breakfast at our hotel this morning.”

She added that “Our team immediately acted to clean and disinfect the area, ensuring the event could continue without further incident.”

Commenting on the move, Indiana Democratic Party spokesman Sam Barloga insisted that “All Americans have the right to peacefully protest, but attacks as heinous as this have no place in our democracy.”

On Monday, a group of pro-Palestinian protesters tore down part of the metal security fence outside the DNC venue, engaging in altercations with police officers. The protesters demanded that President Joe Biden’s administration cut off military aid to Israel and pressure the country’s government to end its military operation against Hamas in Gaza. Several people were arrested in the incident.
