“Walao, 2-3 years ago the price was . Today it has increased by 60%?” — A customer shocked by the current price of .60 for a 500ml bottle of green tea in Singapore

SINGAPORE: One man took to social media to express his disbelief at the increase in the price of a 500ml green tea over the years. He said: “A bottle of green tea is now $1.60… Walao, it was $1 only 2-3 years ago. And now a 60% increase? My salary has never even increased by 60%.”

Some Singaporean netizens were also shocked by the increase, while others were not as surprised, perhaps due to the surge in reports of price increases.

One pointed out: “Back then, that was the price of a 2-litre bottle.” Another joked: “Why do you need nutritional quality products when the price is high enough to prevent purchase.”

Another explained why the price might be high, saying: “This product is definitely a good investment for the convenience of a small bottle. The value for money has always been the 1.5L version.”

The conversation quickly turned to alternatives and potential solutions.

One commenter suggested: “We might as well get the larger 1.5 litre bottle with that kind of price, maybe more interesting, or that one that’s going up too?” Another advised: “Buy real tea leaves and drink real tea. $1.60 for sugar water… No thanks.”

Another person pointed out that making your own tea at home can be more economical. “Well, a 250g pack of loose leaf green tea costs about $4; you can easily make 60 bottles with that price (4g/500ml),” she said.

However, another suggested that the man may have been referring to a sale, as the price seems lower than he remembers from previous years. “What store is this? Supermarket or convenience store? I don’t remember the price being this ‘cheap’ 2 or 3 years ago. Unless it’s a $1 drink sale at 7-11.”

One commenter asked why people were surprised. “You think only the price of green tea has increased? Are your vegetables the same price as in 2020?” he asked.

The man who posted pointed out: “A single teh peng in 2022 was $1.20, and in 2024 it is $1.70, which is a 41% increase, FYI.”

One netizen added that today, we really have no choice but to choose between “price inflation or quantity contraction.” Another netizen “That’s what I notice today too. Remember the time when for $1.60 you could buy a 1.5L bottle.” /TISG
