The German Shorthaired Pointer’s full body movements show how excited he is to meet his newborn sisters.

Anyone who has had the privilege of adopting a dog knows that they are just as much a part of the family as any other human being. A family gathering isn’t complete without them, and the house seems empty without four legs running around. I’ve been there!

While many dogs are the missing piece of the puzzle that completes their family, others are there to welcome new siblings into the world. Henry is one of those dogs, and he has been nothing but welcoming and affectionate toward the twins who have just joined his pack.

On August 16, Henry’s parents posted a video of the sweet moment the happy pointer dog met his little sisters for the very first time. It’s safe to say he’s extremely excited!

Ohhh! This happy dog could barely contain his excitement! He’s already the most affectionate and loving big brother these newborns could ask for, but his duties are just beginning. Just wait until they’re old enough to play with him!

It will be a while before they are old enough to interact with the family dog, but in the meantime, Henry can interact with them. In later videos of the proud new parents, the German Shorthaired Pointer can be seen standing guard over them as they sleep and gently sniffing them when they cry.

Although he struggled to contain his tail wagging and happy jumping when the girls first came home, Henry is excellent at following directions and listening to his parents. He checked in with Mom and Dad several times before sniffing the babies up close, showing that he is still thinking about obedience and manners. What a good boy! Hopefully that kind spirit and gentle manners rub off on the girls as well.

How to Introduce a Dog to a New Baby

While Henry’s parents shared a precious moment that neither of them will soon forget, they didn’t show the enormous amount of work and research that goes into successfully introducing a dog to a baby (or two). Preparation begins long before a new baby joins the family, but planning ahead can ensure that everyone feels safe and happy throughout the interactions.

One helpful thing you can do before the baby arrives is to have your dog listen to the sounds of a baby crying. This will help desensitize him to the sounds your newborn makes, although nothing can really prepare him for the smells that await him.

Let your dog explore the nursery before his sibling is born so he can become as familiar with the nursery as possible. Once the baby is born, ask family and friends to help your puppy maintain a routine, with walks and meals at the same time each day.

However, before you meet your dog and baby, bring home a piece of your little one’s clothing from the hospital for your dog to sniff. When they finally meet, your dog will recognize your baby by his or her scent, and your first introduction step will already be a success!
