49ers rookie continues to make waves with another notable performance

Jacob Cowing stood out during the San Francisco 49ers’ preseason outings.

The rookie receiver caught all three of his targets for 39 yards and a touchdown in San Francisco’s 24-24 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders in the preseason finale Friday night. Cowing also looked confident returning punts, hauling in three for 19 yards, an average of 6.3 yards per return.

This followed a stellar performance in their previous game, where Cowing caught four of his five targets for a team-high 51 receiving yards, and he also had a 19-yard jet sweep where he was able to show off his speed, impressing his teammates and the coaching staff.

“I just keep playing my game,” Cowing told NBC Sports Bay Area after the game when asked about his performance. “I’m confident in my ability every game, every practice I go to. I’m just being present in the moment, not trying to think too far ahead.”

Cowing is referring here to the preseason deadline of Tuesday, Aug. 27, which is the day teams must make their final cuts to whittle down the total number of players on their roster to 53. However, Cowing doesn’t have much to worry about after the way he’s played so far this preseason.

Cowing also had his first touchdown of the preseason in the game against the Raiders when Josh Dobbs threaded the needle and found him in the end zone. That preseason performance was somewhat surprising due to the Arizona product entering training camp with a hamstring injury.

Cowing was on the field for 29 offensive snaps and then played on special teams in the return game against the Raiders. The more reps he gets, the more he prepares for the regular season, and things seem to be looking up for him as the regular season approaches.
