Man killed in western Sydney shooting

SYDNEY, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) — A police investigation is underway after a man was shot dead in western Sydney in the early hours of Monday morning.

Police in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) said in a statement that emergency services were called to a residence in Parramatta, a major suburb 20km west of Sydney’s central business district, shortly after 3:30am local time (1730 GMT Sunday) on Monday following reports of a shooting.

When paramedics arrived, they found a 29-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds. NSW Police said paramedics treated the man but he died at the scene.

Shortly afterwards, emergency services were called to the scene of a car fire about three miles from the shooting scene, where a saloon car, which had been reported stolen, was found engulfed in flames, and two men were reportedly seen leaving the scene in another vehicle.

“While the investigation continues, it is not known whether the two incidents are linked. However, the fire is being treated as suspicious,” NSW Police said.

Detectives have urged anyone with CCTV or dash cam footage or information about either incident to come forward and contact police.
