BoAt Stone Lumos LED Projection Speaker Review: A Good Portable Speaker Under Rs 10,000

BoAt Stone Lumos LED Projection Speaker Review: A Good Portable Speaker Under Rs 10,000

Over the past few years, boAt has successfully established itself as a value-for-money audio brand. The company offers affordable audio devices with good sound quality. The latest addition to this collection is the boAt Stone Lumos speaker, which comes with LED projection. I used the device for a few weeks and found it to be a solid speaker in the sub-Rs 10,000 segment. Why? Let’s find out in this review.

Portable speaker with LED projection for a cinematic feel

The boAt Stone Lumos turns heads not only because of its sound, but also because of its design. The first thing you’ll notice is its sturdy, somewhat rugged build, which screams durability. Weighing in at 2kg, it’s not the lightest speaker, but it’s sturdy enough to feel solid without being too bulky.

Wrapped in a solid exterior with a matte finish, the speaker feels premium in hand, while the cylindrical shape with a sturdy mesh grille provides a good grip and portability experience. The handle on the top of the speaker adds to its portability, allowing you to carry it around easily or even hang it on a hook. The speaker is IPX4 rated, making it sweat and splash resistant. While it would have been better to have the support of IP68 water resistance rating, the IPX4 rating is not bad. You can use the speaker by the pool or while hiking without worrying about damage.

The control buttons are placed on the top, with a rubber finish that not only feels sturdy but also makes it easier to use when the speaker is wet. boAt has equipped the speaker with all the necessary buttons, including play/pause, volume, power off and more. The ports, including USB-C, USB Type-A and a 3.5mm aux input, are protected by a good quality flap, which helps make it water-resistant.

One of the cool things about this speaker is the LED projection. You might be wondering if it would project videos or images onto a regular wall. That’s not what it’s meant for. The LED is there to diffuse light throughout your room and give it a dreamy look when you’re watching a movie at night.

I watched a Marvel movie with this speaker and it gave me a cinematic experience. The sound quality is solid and the dynamic lighting effects make intense scenes enjoyable by syncing with the dialogues and events on the screen. This feature adds a whole new dimension of excitement to intensive viewing, making it more engaging and fun. The speaker can easily fill a small to medium-sized room. We’ll talk about the sound part in a moment.

The boAt Stone Lumos can also be customized via the boAt Hearables app, where you can select different themes or lighting effects to suit your mood. However, the options are somewhat limited, and it would be even better if the company expanded the selection to improve the overall experience.

Sound quality that impresses especially in its price range

The boAt Stone Lumos also impresses with its sound quality, considering its affordable price. I got a well-rounded audio experience that punches above its weight. Equipped with 2 front-firing speakers and a passive radiator for bass, the speaker offers a total power of 60W, which is more than enough to fill a medium-sized room, but it is not the best choice for large outdoor gatherings.

Indoors, it delivers a bass-heavy sound with good depth in the low frequencies. The speaker rarely overpowers the bass over the mids. But I can say that vocals are generally clear and the highs are crisp without being harsh and at higher volumes, distortion is minimal. It will probably enjoy listening to Bollywood songs, some EDM and pop music. While it doesn’t offer 360-degree sound distribution, the sound remains consistent throughout the space when placed near a wall.

Also, I had no pairing issues with this speaker. It is very easy to connect it instantly to the smartphone. The good thing about this Bluetooth speaker is that it automatically turns off after a while when it detects that the device is not in use. This saves battery life, but it gets annoying sometimes because every time I feel like using the speaker after a few hours in a day, I have to turn it on again and again. It is worth mentioning that the device connects easily to multiple devices after pairing them once, although the speaker does not always connect (automatically) and I had to go to the Bluetooth setting to pair it.

Battery life is okay

It’s equipped with an 800mAh battery that boAt claims can provide up to 9 hours of continuous playback. In real-world usage, the speaker survives for nearly 4-5 hours on a single charge with volume levels set to 60% and the LED feature turned off. However, the device drains battery quickly when you use the LED feature. It lasts 1-2 hours, depending on the volume setting. As a result, I had to keep the speaker plugged into an outlet to be able to use it for hours. But keep in mind that your results will likely vary depending on volume levels and whether you’re using it via Bluetooth or an auxiliary input. Charging the speaker using the USB-C port takes less than 45 minutes. Overall, the boAt Stone Lumos’ battery life is reliable.

BoAt Stone Lumos LED Projector Review: Is It Worth Buying?

Yes, it is worth buying. The boAt Stone Lumos is priced at Rs 6,999 and is a complete portable speaker. It combines rugged durability with a premium design and delivers good sound for bass lovers. It also comes with an IPX4 splash-resistant rating and a decent battery life that makes it a reliable companion. The LED projection feature, which is also its USP, is super cool for a good binge-watching experience. It is also worth mentioning that Flipkart is currently giving bank discounts on this speaker, which will allow people to buy it at a slightly lower price.
