Carlos Brathwaite throws down his bat after controversial dismissal

In a shocking display of frustration, New York Strikers star Carlos Brathwaite resorted to an unsportsmanlike act during Qualifying Match 1 against the Grand Cayman Jaguars at the Max60 Caribbean 2024 tournament. The incident, which has since gone viral on social media, has put Brathwaite in a bad light and raised questions about his on-field conduct.

Controversial dismissal sparks Brathwaite reaction

The incident occurred when Brathwaite faced a pass from Joshua Little. The ball hit his shoulder before being caught behind the stumps. However, the umpire, much to Brathwaite’s dismay, raised his finger, indicating a dismissal for being caught behind.

Convinced that he had not touched the ball, Brathwaite expressed his displeasure by smashing his helmet with his bat as he returned to the pavilion. The force of the impact sent the helmet flying off the pitch and Brathwaite followed up by throwing his bat as well, further highlighting his frustration with the decision.

New York Strikers triumph despite controversy

Despite the unsavoury incident, New York Strikers managed to secure an eight-run victory over Grand Cayman Jaguars in Qualifier 1. Batting first, the Strikers posted a respectable total of 108/8, with contributions from Mitchell Owen (22 off 10 balls), Brandon McMullen (18 off 8) and captain Thisara Perera (16 off 7).

Jaguars, in pursuit of their target, fell short by eight runs, finishing at 96/5. Alex Hales’ unbeaten 35 runs off 24 balls and Sikandar Raza’s 27 runs off 16 deliveries were not enough to secure victory for Jaguars. Ansh Patel was the standout bowler for the Strikers, picking up 2/8 from his two overs.

Brathwaite’s disciplinary record called into question

This is not the first time Brathwaite has been embroiled in controversy. The West Indian all-rounder has had disciplinary issues before, including a ban from the 2021 Caribbean Premier League for using inappropriate language towards an opponent. His latest outburst has once again called into question his conduct, and it remains to be seen whether the tournament organisers will take action against him.

New York Strikers will now face Caribbean Tigers in the final of the Max60 Caribbean 2024 tournament. Fans and pundits alike will be eager to see how Brathwaite and his team respond to this incident, both on and off the field. The final promises to be an exciting one, with both teams battling it out for the coveted trophy.
