Centralia City Council to be asked to approve new trash collection contract with higher rates

Centralia City Council to be asked to approve new trash collection contract with higher rates

The Centralia City Council will consider Monday night a new five-year contract agreement with CWI doing business as Republic Services.

Under the new contract, the price for garbage collection will increase to $16.85 per month for household garbage and $4.18 for yard waste starting Oct. 1. The city’s current rates are $13.80 for household garbage and $3.70 for yard waste. There will then be an annual increase of 3% for each year of the five-year contract.

The contract will allow all residents to request bulky item pickup twice a month at no additional cost. The city previously charged $4.50 per resident for the service.

CWI was one of two bidders. The other bidder, Sunrise Sanitation of Salem, had proposed higher rates.

The city will continue to provide vacuuming and leaf collection services and will retain the fee collected for this service at a rate of $3.64 per month.

The monthly rate for all collection services will be $24.67 starting October 1. Raccoon Lake residents will only pay for garbage collection.

City Manager Kory Smith says the city could also consider taking over yard waste management services rather than outsourcing them to a contractor.

Council will also be asked to purchase play equipment for Fairview Park through an OSLAD grant. The project will involve building a multi-generational playground with an obstacle course, a musical play area and upgraded play equipment for ages six months to over 13 years. Unsafe equipment will be removed and salvaged for another use if it is safe to do so.

The meeting begins at six o’clock Monday evening at Centralia City Hall.
