Cheer and dance classes offered in parks and recreation centers

All American Youth Activities offers weekly pep classes that promote self-esteem and confidence.

Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation partners with All American Youth Activities to offer dance and cheerleading lessons to young athletes.

While young cheerleaders and dancers will learn new techniques and skills, All American Youth Activities’ goal is to teach self-esteem and confidence through its programs. Classes will also foster friendships, promote physical fitness and encourage young athletes to work with others.

Cheerleading classes teach basic stunts and different jumping styles through choreographed routines and techniques.

“In addition to learning to be carried away by crowd cheers and popular songs, and to work in groups, children learn better coordination, flexibility, cooperation with others, and self-esteem,” according to the All American Youth Activities website. “Shyness is very often overcome.”

Dance classes offer recreational hip-hop and modern jazz classes that mimic a “music video style.”

“Our dance classes are taught in a fun, relaxed and musical atmosphere that will help prepare students for their future dance interests,” the website states.

At the end of each season, performers will compete in a competition to showcase the routines they have learned and practiced with All American Youth Activities. Classes typically have 20 to 25 students, usually taught by college students who are members of their school’s dance or cheerleading teams.

The pay-as-you-go system allows students to try out classes without any mandatory contracts. Previous dance and cheerleading experience is not required or necessary, but students are encouraged to bring a good attitude and high energy to every class.

Children ages 5 to 15 can attend after-school night classes for $8 to $10 per week at various locations throughout Hillsborough County. Dance and cheerleading classes are divided into three different age groups.

All American Youth Activities has nine locations in Hillsborough County, including Brandon Park & Recreation Center, Ruskin Park & Recreation Center and Gardenville Park & Recreation Center in Gibsonton. These locations offer cheer and dance programs for students.

“Our goal is to provide high-quality, ongoing outreach programs that are youth-focused and affordable for all,” according to the website.
