Miami man charged for more than two years after Florida highway shooting

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL — A Miami man was criminally charged Friday, more than two years after he shot two people during a road rage incident on Florida’s Turnpike, authorities said.

Jermaine Marquan Jackson, 30, is charged with attempted murder, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, shooting or throwing a deadly missile and improper display of a firearm.

According to his arrest report, the shooting happened around 1 p.m. on Jan. 11, 2022, in the southbound lanes of the highway at the Golden Glades interchange.

Florida Highway Patrol officers said a man was driving a blue 2013 Honda Civic when a silver Chevrolet sedan tried to cut him off.

“When the victim did not allow the Chevrolet to enter his lane, the driver of the Chevrolet pulled alongside his vehicle on the hard shoulder and fired 1-2 shots from the passenger window,” FHP Lt. Alex Camacho told Local 10 News in an email at the time.

According to Camacho, the driver and his passenger, a woman, were both shot.

He said that after the shooting, the man went to the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Northside District headquarters and informed an officer that he and his girlfriend had been shot.

Miami-Dade Fire Department then responded and transported the victims to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Camacho said the driver was shot in the right forearm and his girlfriend was shot in the left arm.

According to the arrest report, detectives first identified the Chevy involved in the incident and its license plate number, which helped them link Jackson to the crime.

Police said Jackson was arrested and initially charged with driving with a suspended license.

Authorities said he made a spontaneous statement, but that statement was redacted from the public report.

According to the report, Jackson was not immediately charged in connection with the shooting due to “analysis of additional evidence.”

Authorities said one of the victims later identified Jackson in a photo lineup as the person who shot him.

Police said records from a nearby cell tower show Jackson’s cell phone was near the scene at the time of the shooting.

According to the report, several attempts were made to arrest Jackson, but they failed.

“On August 22, 2024, the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office requested that I complete missing forms pending the 2022 warrant requested for the defendant,” the arrest report states. “While searching for the SID and FBI number to complete the forms, I came across an attempted arrest for murder of the defendant in January 2024 by the Miami-Dade Police Department.”

Authorities said they learned Jackson remains in jail for that arrest, and charges have been filed in Friday’s road rage incident.

As of Monday, Jackson remained in custody at the Metrowest Detention Center without bail.
