IAEA Director General Grossi says there is risk of nuclear incident in Russia’s Kursk region

KURCHATOV, Russia — The head of the U.N. nuclear agency, Rafael Grossi, said Tuesday after visiting Russia’s Kursk nuclear power plant that there was a risk of a “nuclear incident” and that the situation was serious.

Russia says the plant has been repeatedly attacked by Ukrainian forces just 25 miles away, after occupying part of Russian territory this month. Ukraine has yet to respond to the accusations.

Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said at a news conference that the plant was extremely fragile because it had no protective dome.

He said the site was currently still operating in very close to normal conditions, but that meant the security situation was even more serious. REUTERS
