League City Council to consider library committee vote to move children’s book

The League City Council will consider whether to affirm or reject a library standards review committee’s vote to move a children’s book to the library’s parent section.

What you need to know

On August 27, the City Council will discuss and vote to reject or uphold the Community Standards Review Advisory Committee’s vote to move Jonathan Hillman’s “Big Wig” to a higher shelf in the Helen Hall Library, allowing only adults to view the book.

The committee, founded in February 2023 to review books that League City residents find offensive or inappropriate, voted on July 31 to move the book. Only two of the committee’s six members were present for the vote.

The city council was originally scheduled to consider the issue at its Aug. 13 meeting, but chose to postpone the discussion and vote until a later date.

What else?

“Big Wig” is the first book in the library that the committee has decided to move. Previously, the committee had considered moving another book, Granddad’s Pride, but voted against it.
