Meet Music Producer Larrance Dopson: Changing Music

August is Black Business Month and tonight we’re focusing on a game changer in the music world. Four-time Grammy-winning producer Larrance Dopson has ties to some of the biggest acts of our time, including Nipsey Hussle, Roddy Rich, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Beyoncé and Bruno Mars, through his 1500 Sound Academy.

His partner in the business is award-winning songwriter James Fauntleroy. They have a state-of-the-art production studio and student academy in Inglewood.

For Dopson, who grew up in the choir and orchestra at First AME Church in South Los Angeles, “God First” is his motto. His friends call Larrance “Rance.”

1500 Sound Academy is also a family affair. His father and sister both teach at the music academy. His father Lawrence Dopson calls what was built here.

“Heaven,” Lawrence said.

Ask “Rance” if he could have imagined what they built? He says “yes” and says it’s just “overcoming distractions, and that’s the hardest part.” On his Instagram, @rance1500 writes this hashtag: #InCULTUREweTrust.
