Two workers killed, one seriously injured in crash at Delta Air Lines maintenance plant in Atlanta

ATLANTA, Ga. (ABC NEWS) — Two workers were killed and another was seriously injured in a crash at Delta Air Lines’ Atlanta Technical Operations Maintenance Center at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, according to Delta TechOps.

Details surrounding Tuesday morning’s crash were unclear, but Delta TechOps said the incident occurred at its wheel and brake shop.

According to Delta, the accident involved a tire and components inside the tire. The wheel was not attached to an aircraft or in the vicinity of an aircraft at the time of the accident, according to Delta.

“We are supporting their families during this difficult time and are investigating to determine what happened,” John Laughter, executive vice president, chief operating officer and president of Delta TechOps, said in a statement. “This news is heartbreaking for all of us. (Employee Assistance Program) resources will be on-site at the (Atlanta TechOps Maintenance) facility to support our teams for as long as needed.”

The incident had no impact on airport operations, airport officials said.

Delta said it is “working with local authorities and conducting a full investigation to determine what happened.”

The airline added that it was “deeply sorry” and “grateful for the quick action of first responders and medical teams on site.”

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said, “I extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased Delta employees. My thoughts are also with those who were injured and I hope they make a speedy and full recovery.”

Police, firefighters and airport crews are on the scene, the mayor said.

Atlanta airport officials also offered their condolences.
