The annual silent auction of cakes will be open to the public for the 9th year on September 8, Guinean Heritage Day, at the Abingdon Ruritan Club building. Since 2015, this spectacular event has highlighted Guinean cakes and those who bake them.
This silent auction was set up to financially support the Guinea Heritage Museum and was inspired by Della Grinnell. Initially, the sale was limited to 20 homemade cakes at a fixed price of $25 each. Many of the cakes were sold before they were even sold, but it was a disappointment to those who were there to buy them, especially one lady who had travelled all the way from Middlesex.
In 2016, the cake sale was overhauled. Nan Evans joined Della to set up the auction system that has existed ever since. All cakes had a starting bid of $25 with the potential to go much higher. (Last year’s seven-layer chocolate cake went for $200 to one lucky buyer.)
