Taylor Swift concert in Vienna: CIA reveals foiled terrorist plot to kill tens of thousands on site

CIA Deputy Director David S. Cohen revealed at the annual intelligence summit near Washington that the plot, which had links to ISIS, was foiled thanks to intelligence shared between the CIA and its partners. According to the New York Times, Cohen stressed the scale of the threat: “They were plotting to kill an enormous number of people, tens of thousands, at this concert. I’m sure many Americans were among the targets.”
Details of how the CIA discovered the plot have not been released. However, Austrian authorities have arrested three suspects in connection with the planned attack: a 19-year-old Austrian, a 17-year-old Austrian and an 18-year-old Iraqi. The plot is believed to have been inspired by the Islamic State group.
On August 8, Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, director of the Austrian State Security and Intelligence Directorate, confirmed that the 19-year-old suspect had confessed to planning an attack at Swift’s concert using explosives and knives. “His goal was to kill himself and a large number of people during the concert,” Haijawi-Pirchner said at a press conference, as reported by Le Monde. The total attendance for the three canceled concerts was estimated at around 200,000.
Taylor Swift addressed the incident in a heartfelt Instagram post. “The cancellation of our Vienna shows was devastating,” she wrote. “The reason for the cancellations left me with a new sense of fear and an overwhelming sense of guilt, as so many people had planned to come to these shows. But I was also so grateful to the authorities, because thanks to them we were mourning concerts and not lives.”
