A New York man is charged with murder after allegedly shooting his ex-wife and her boyfriend to death while the divorced couple’s teenage daughter sat in the car outside.

On Wednesday, August 28, Daniel Coppola, 50, entered the home of ex-wife Kelly Coppola and her partner Kenneth Pohlman in Saint James, Long Island, before shooting and killing them, police said.

A statement from the Suffolk County Police Department obtained by PEOPLE on August 30 states that “4th Precinct officers responded to 21 Brasswood Road after a 911 caller reported that a 15-year-old girl had left the residence with her father, without her mother’s knowledge.”

When police arrived, they found two adults inside the home, both dead from gunshot wounds. Authorities say Kelly and Pohlman were both shot by Daniel, according to a Suffolk County police statement.

Several media outlets, including WABC, WNBC and CBS News, reported details of the incident.

According to WNBC, the incident occurred at the victims’ home on Brasswood Road around 11:30 p.m. local time after the suspect called his daughter and told her not to be in the house, police said.

According to CBS News, police said Daniel put the 15-year-old in his car, before killing Kelly, 50, and Kenneth, 53. He then allegedly drove himself and his daughter to his Head of the Harbor home.

Suffolk County Police Detective Lt. Kevin Beyrer said, according to WNBC: “He contacted her, told her to get out of the house. He then went into the house and committed these murders.”

“She’s texting her friends, saying, ‘I don’t know what my dad did. I don’t know how my mom is,’” Beyrer added of the teen’s actions as her father drove her home, according to the outlet.

According to Suffolk County police, Daniel has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder.

CBS News reported that the teenager called 911 at 11:45 p.m. to tell police that her father was threatening to kill himself with a gun at his home. Authorities responded and took Daniel into custody.

The 15-year-old’s friends then called 911 around 11:54 p.m. after being unable to reach the teen’s mother, the outlet said. The friends told police that the former couple’s daughter had left her mother’s home with her father without her mother knowing.

Police later arrived at the property on Brasswood Road and found the bodies of Kelly and Kenneth inside.

Kenneth’s brother, Tom Pohlman, said of the alleged shooting, according to WNBC: “Two shots in the door to get into the house, then multiple shots upstairs.”

Tom said of Daniel: “He was a jealous ex-husband. My brother made Daniel’s ex-wife happy and he wasn’t happy about that… When they started dating a year ago, there were a lot of threats.”

“She brought out the best in him, he brought out the best in her. They were very happy,” he added, according to the outlet.

Kenneth’s other brother, John, told ABC7NY’s Eyewitness News: “I wasn’t known as John Pohlman when I was younger, I was ‘Kenny Pohlman’s little brother,’ that’s what they called me. He’d give you the shirt off your back.”

According to CBS News, Kenneth was a father of three children. “Two of his children lost their mother 17 years ago to cancer. Now this maniac has taken their father away from them. He has another child who also lost his father,” Tom Pohlman said, according to the outlet.
