Telangana rain: Mother, daughter die in sleep after house collapses
Many parts of Telangana experienced heavy rains

HYDERABAD: A father-daughter duo, a mother-daughter duoand a couple among nine people died in rain related accidents on a 24 hour period till Sunday in Telangana beaten by torrential rains.
Meanwhile, the capital region of Andhra Pradesh has turned into a virtual lake following an unprecedented 37 cm of rainfall in a single day. Vijayawada The city of Vijayawada remained cut off from the Hyderabad rail network, and road and rail links with Visakhapatnam and Chennai were disrupted. Cities like Amaravati and Guntur were also cut off from the Hyderabad rail network. The sudden overflow of the Budameru River in Vijayawada caused severe flooding, submerging 40% of the city area.
The death toll from torrential rains rose to 15, including one person who drowned in floodwaters in the city on Sunday. In Telangana, scientist Ashwini Nunavut, 27, and her father Motilal Nunavut, 50, were swept away by the current of Akeru vagu stream while crossing a bridge in Maripeda mandal of Mahabubabad district.
The two men were on their way to the airport. “In their last communication with their family members, they reported that the water level was rising rapidly and was almost up to their necks. Shortly after, their phones went silent,” police said.
Rescue teams recovered Ashwini’s body, which was stuck in a tree, but Motilal’s was not found. Earlier this year, Ashwini was awarded the Young Scientist Award by the ICAR-National Institute of Biotic Stress Management in Raipur.
In another accident, a mother and her daughter died in their sleep when their house collapsed in Ekkamedu village in Kothapalli mandal of Narayanpet district. “Harijana Hanumama, 65, and Anjulamma, 42, were agricultural labourers,” police said.
On Saturday, two members of a family were swept away by floodwaters in Palair constituency. Recalling the tragedy, Telangana Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy on Sunday got emotional. “We tried our best to save the family. The helicopters could not take off immediately. The parents could not be saved, but their son was rescued,” he said.
