Pope Francis to meet President-elect Prabowo Subianto

Jakarta. Pope Francis is scheduled to meet President-elect Prabowo Subianto as part of his tour of Jakarta, but details of the meeting remain unclear.

Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas unveiled the plans shortly after welcoming the pope’s arrival at Soekarno-Hatta airport on Tuesday. The minister told reporters that state protocols arranged for the meeting.

“Pope Francis is expected to meet Prabowo at one of these meetings. But we will ask the state protocol for the technical details,” Yaqut said.

The minister claimed to have forgotten the details of the meeting between Prabowo and Pope Francis. However, according to Yaqut, this meeting is also scheduled on the agenda of the Pope’s visit.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo is scheduled to receive Pope Francis at Merdeka Palace on Wednesday. His Jakarta travel schedule also includes a visit to the Cathedral Church and participation in interfaith discussions at the Istiqlal Mosque, among other places. He will also preside over a mass at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Thursday. However, the publicly released schedule does not include a meeting with Prabowo.

The Pope will be in Jakarta until Friday.
