Registration opens for Macomb Community College’s MORE programs – Macomb Daily

As summer draws to a close, as children eagerly await the return to school, Macomb County seniors look forward to the classes, trips, seminars and enrichment opportunities offered by the Macomb Organization for Retiree Enrichment (MORE).

The session begins on October 5.

This year’s edition of MORE, presented annually by Macomb Community College (MCC), features more than 50 classes and three field trips covering everything from local history and science to nature, health and wellness.

This fall also marks the program’s 10th anniversary.

“For a decade, Macomb Community College has offered a dedicated program for seniors in our community to explore and expand their interests, engage in thoughtful dialogue and just have fun,” said William Wood, MCC’s director of cultural affairs and community engagement, in a news release.

Nearly half of the courses are new, and about 35% of previously offered courses have been updated with new content. A selection is also available via Zoom for those who can’t attend in person.

Registration for fall programs is now open.

Each course offered lasts approximately two hours with time set aside for a question and answer period and is taught by subject matter experts.

To give you an idea, here are some highlights from the fall session:

Health insurance made simple

Adam Simon, with over 14 years of experience in the insurance industry, will lead a presentation on Original Medicare and how it can be combined with a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage plan.

Fraud Red Flags and Online Shopping Security

Monica Beach, Education Foundation Manager for the Better Business Bureau of Eastern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, will highlight some of the fraud schemes currently being seen locally, how to spot the red flags to avoid becoming a victim, and outline steps you can take to help support safe online shopping experiences. This class is also available via Zoom.

Rough seas: the Edmund Fitzgerald

Charlie Shelton, a community interpreter with Huron-Clinton Metroparks, is an expert on Michigan history and will present the history of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald and explore the causes of the ship’s sinking. This presentation is also available via Zoom.

Excursions planned for the MORE fall semester include a tour of the Pewabic Pottery with a workshop on how to glaze tiles in the same manner as the Pewabic manufacturing team, a tour of the Detroit Institute of Arts, and a tour of the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, which is a National Historic Landmark.

Seniors can choose from four MORE packages. New participants can try out the program with a three-class package for $30. A seven-class package is $56, with 10 classes for $75. A special flexible package is also available for $120 for 14 classes. Those who choose this package can choose additional classes beyond the 14 included in the package at no extra charge five days before the course starts, and the course must have sufficient seating. Excursions may incur additional fees.

Other classes are held at the Macomb University Center on the college’s central campus at 44575 Garfield Rd. in Clinton Township. To view the course catalog and register, visit LorenzoCulturalCenter.com/MORE.
