Cozy Store Management RPG 'Inspired by Kiki's Delivery Service, Persona 5, and Paris' Is a Hit on Kickstarter

The Witch’s Bakery is a shop management RPG that takes inspiration from all the right places – or at least all the places I’m excited about – and unsurprisingly, it’s already doing great on Kickstarter so far.

The name Witch’s Bakery pretty much says it all. You play as a witch. You run a bakery. You also have a magical pink cat. Oh, and the bakery is set in modern-day Paris. The game is split between running the shop by day, baking bread in mini-games and decorating, and then exploring the city at night to make friends or relax. The trailer below shows off both states, along with a wonderful 2D art style.

On Twitter, developer Sunny Labs Games explained that the game was “inspired by Kiki’s Delivery Service, Persona 5, and Paris.” This is clearly evident in the social connections and misadventures of The Witch’s Bakery, and it’s a winning combination that attracted nearly 2,000 backers to fully fund the game’s initial Kickstarter goal in just 48 hours. There’s plenty of reason to want that number to continue to grow, though, as future goals promise more Parisian vistas and a Nintendo Switch release.

“Of course, we don’t cover all of Paris in the game (that would be crazy!), but there are 15 different levels, with recognizable places and landmarks, but also lesser-known local treasures,” the Kickstarter page explains. “You can learn about the history of each location, meet a cast of endearing characters, discover new quests, and participate in a variety of activities.”

The only other thing that caught my eye was “The Heart Palace.” In addition to its already well-stocked assortment of inspirations, The Witch’s Bakery also has a very psychonautical ability to reach into the psyches of friends to guide their emotions through a darker dream space that probably also houses nasty monsters. Emotional baggage, huh?
