BJP making 'secret deals' with some local parties, independents: Omar

Srinagar: National Conference (NC) Vice President Omar Abdullah on Saturday accused the BJP of “making secret deals” with some regional parties And Independents to form a government in Jammu and Kashmir after the September 18-October 1 general elections.
North Carolina has forged an alliance with the Congress for the elections to the 90 Assembly seats. Addressing a rally in the Ganderbal Assembly segment where he is contesting, Omar referred to Amit Shah’s remarks in Jammu, saying the Union Home Minister was “silent” on the Apni Party and the People’s Conference during his speech at the BJP manifesto launch on Friday.
“Those who have made a deal with Delhi will not respond to your demands. If you need proof, just look at Shah’s statement. The Home Minister has listed the parties with which the BJP will not form the government. However, he has remained silent on Independents because they are in cahoots (with them). He has remained silent on the Apni Party and the People’s Conference,” Omar said.
The former chief minister even sought to cast doubt on the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), led by jailed MP Engineer Rashid, which had defeated Omar in the Baramulla seat in this summer’s Lok Sabha elections. Omar pointed out that Shah had not included the AIP among the parties with which the BJP would not have a tie-up. “I thought he (Shah) would at least name Engineer Rashid’s party, but he didn’t,” Omar told the rally.
Omar’s remarks come on the day Rasheed’s AIP and the Sajad Lone-led People’s Conference unveiled their manifestos.
The People’s Conference vowed to continue fighting for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status under Article 370 and its statehood by supporting “efforts within and outside legislative forums.” Another key element was the promise to set up a judicial commission to investigate alleged fraud in the 1987 legislative elections, when North Carolina was in power. The fraud-tainted elections were widely believed to have sparked a surge in militancy in Jammu and Kashmir in the following years.
Rasheed’s AIP has promised the release of all imprisoned youth of the Valley and efforts to revoke laws like the Public Safety Act (PSA) and UAPA. Most of the youth were imprisoned under these two stringent laws.
