24kGoldn in concert – Massachusetts Daily Collegian

The Growing Pains tour follows the life of 23-year-old Golden Landis Von Jones after his breakthrough. He first came to prominence with his song “Mood,” which was later covered by Justin Bieber, and he went on to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and be featured on the soundtracks of blockbuster films.

With these major recognitions within the music industry, 24kGoldn is more than aware of being at the crossroads between growing public awareness and the attention of the music industry. His latest album, “Growing Pains,” and the accompanying tour provided a glimpse behind the curtain, observing the complexities of these intersections and their role in shaping his future.

Albums described as honest and vulnerable are often misinterpreted as requiring a more stripped-down production, and are perceived as a new, calmer image of an artist. Although this category is what 24kGoldn was looking for, the image is different. Still in his early twenties, he is embarking on a new introspection, free of influences that are not entirely positive.

Rather than the usual image of an artist filled with a new introspective consciousness and who has gotten rid of his past discography, 24kGoldn brings a new musicality that suits him. Still in the hip-hop genre, he has taken a new direction of writing, mixed with rock and R&B elements. On stage, the respect for his own past is in line with his development as an artist.

The Union Stage resembles a small, intimate gathering. Purple lights envelop the room, creating a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The audience is made up of groups of friends who greet each other as newcomers arrive. They all sway and vibrate to the music that is playing in anticipation of 24kGoldn’s set. A large tapestry hangs on the back wall of the mostly empty stage. Stripped of any elaborate stage decorations, the room draws attention to the impending performance.

With an explosion of music and bright lights, 24kGoldn takes the stage singing “VALENTINO.” His vocals create an instant energy that draws the crowd forward. The stage lights alternate with each beat of the song, increasing the energy in the room. This is his first tour in Washington, DC and he explains how amazed he was by the reception he received. It creates a harmony between him and the crowd, who are immediately receptive to 24kGoldn’s love for his city.

24kGoldn explained how he was able to gain fans throughout the different stages of his career, and he then discussed with his audience the moments that led to the creation of “Growing Pains.” He shared with the audience the impact of fame on his identity. In the same way that 24kGoldn faced obstacles on the album, the live performance also addressed these changes in himself and his career.

During “Dog House,” he plays guitar throughout the entire song. His guitar made its first appearance earlier in the concert during “Good Intentions.” Over the past six months, he’s been learning to play guitar to become a better artist. The live guitar added a dimension to the performance of 24kGoldn’s favorite song off the record.

Maintaining the audience’s interest while maintaining their stamina is a crucial balance when performing, especially in smaller venues. But these are two variables that 24kGoldn managed well. From the moment he stepped on stage, his voice was clear and energetic, often standing close to the audience. There was never any doubt about his passion for performing. Given the few to no breaks and constant movement on stage, it was surprising to see the consistency in delivery and performance. On the contrary, as he slowly reached the end of his set and performed songs that were more rap-driven than melody-driven, his vigor seemed to increase.

24kGoldn motioned for the audience to join him in his performance, which helped keep the audience engaged throughout the concert. Even without directing the audience, he found his enjoyment as the concert progressed. A small group of excited fans jumped around, couples repeated the lyrics to each other, and the audience danced with different dance moves to the rhythm of the changes in rhythm. Even between songs, no one seemed tired or waiting for the end.

The show ended with 24kGoldn performing his most famous hit, “Mood.” The crowd erupted, singing along louder than they had throughout the entire show. The fact that “Mood” was saved until the end felt like a victory lap for him and his fans. Throughout the show, he displayed genuine connections with his fans, so a callback to the beginning of his career feels celebratory.

As he embarks on this new tour, 24kGoldn has developed his craft to convey the direction he wants to take his career while staying connected to his past. New lyrical themes combined with acting and production made for a captivating live performance. The audience left the show with images of 24kGoldn moving from the past to the present but still dedicated to his audience – while gaining a sense of the artist’s purpose beyond himself.
