The New York Jets had a tough challenge to start the season, and it appears they have failed.

There should be no shame in losing to a team like the San Francisco 49ers, especially on the road.

The problem, however, is that the Jets didn’t even seem to be on the same level as them.

HC Robert Saleh was clearly unhappy after the loss, particularly due to his team’s below-average defensive performance.

He claimed the Niners were a championship-caliber team and pitched them championship-caliber football, promising to fix the defense (via Jets Videos).

The Jets allowed the Niners to score on five consecutive drives.

Needless to say, this is not what you’d expect from a Super Bowl contender, especially one that relies on its defensive prowess.

The Jets have been a solid defensive team for most of Saleh’s tenure, but that wasn’t the case in the season opener.

This could force the team to make a deal with Haason Reddick, as their pass rush could definitely use some help.

On the positive side, Aaron Rodgers looks healthy and sharp, and his relationship with Garrett Wilson is very promising.

Breece Hall also looked solid, save for an early fumble.

The Jets have the personnel and coaching to turn around their defense.

But the defeat in the first game of the season may have been a blow to fans who expected more from their team.
