Local TSA Agent Explains How 9/11 Inspired Her Career

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – As we prepare to honor victims, survivors and heroes on the 23rd anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, we learn how 9/11 inspired one local public servant.

Like millions of us across the country, Yvonne Neal still remembers where she was when the attacks happened.

“I was sleeping and my husband woke me up and said, ‘We’re at war’… whatever it was at the time,” Neal said.

This experience eventually led her to become a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer at South Bend International Airport.

“I knew I wanted to honor someone, something to give back,” Neal said. “I wasn’t sure what that was at the time. Two months later, TSA was formed and I knew right then that’s what I wanted to do.”

Neal took the time on Tuesday to share some of his story.

“9/11 is still hard for me. My family knows I’m having a hard time with it,” Neal said. “I didn’t know anyone personally there. It’s tough, but I come to work and do what I have to do that day to make sure the passengers get to their destination and get to their loved ones safely.”

Neal has worked for the TSA since 2017. She said she loves her job and, fortunately, most of the people who come through her line are nice.

Neal also has tattoos honoring the dead, including the Twin Towers, a crying angel and a firefighter walking up a staircase.
