California boys open with Section 5-AA sweep

California opened the Section 5-AA cross country schedule at home Tuesday afternoon by sweeping Belle Vernon and East Allegheny.

The Trojans beat Belle Vernon, 28-29, and East Allegheny, 25-30. The Leopards won against the Wildcats, 22-35.

California’s Niamh McClaflin finished first with a time of 19:04. Her teammate Carter Kent was third with a time of 19:25. Charles Meiss (8, 21:55) and Quinn Barbero (9, 22:51) also finished in the top 10.

Belle Vernon’s Logan Metzger finished fourth in 19:27, followed by Colby Hibner (20:05) and Sam Rushak (21:35).

Laurel Highlands 21, Elizabeth Forward 34; Thomas Jefferson 21, Laurel Highlands 40; Thomas Jefferson 28, Ringgold 31; Ringgold 20, Elizabeth Forward 38 – The Mustangs and Rams split the first meeting of Section 2-AAA at Thomas Jefferson.

Matt Schwertfeger of Laurel Highlands won the race in 17:58. Daniel Peterson of Ringgold crossed the line in second with a time of 18:46.

Ringgold’s Andrew Bruce (4, 18:58) and Ethan Rohr (5, 19:39) finished in the top 10. Laurel Highlands’ Drake Shaffer was ninth in 19:49.

Kristofer Vietmeier had the best finish for the Warriors in 12th place in 20:43.

Calvary Chapel Christian School 15, South Allegheny 50; Calvary Chapel Christian School 24, Steel Valley 36; Calvary Chapel Christian School 15, Southmoreland 50; South Park 15, Steel Valley 34; South Park 15, Southmoreland 50; Steel Valley 15, Southmoreland 50 – Calvary Chapel Christian School won a Section 5-AA home game.

Alex Broul of Steel Valley was first in 21:27, followed by Dylan Bierhals of Southmoreland in second in 21:41. Connor Dillon of the Scotties was fifth in 23:18.

CCCS’s Stephen Chapley placed third with a time of 21:50. Teammates Caleb Bevans (8, 24:35) and Logan Angelo (10, 25:38) finished in the top 10.

Greensburg Community College 17, Brownsville 38; Serra Catholic College 24, Brownsville 31; Greensburg Community College 20, Serra Catholic College 35 – The Falcons’ Owen Shimshock finished third overall with a time of 20:10 at a Section 5-AA home meet.

Lukas Czegan of Greensburg CC finished first in 17:29 and Will Gazelewski was second in 19:45.

Brownsville’s Sam Vol finished 10th in 23:04.

Girls’ Cross Country

Laurel Highlands 26, Elizabeth Forward 31; Thomas Jefferson 26, Laurel Highlands 31; Thomas Jefferson 21, Ringgold 40; Elizabeth Forward 25, Ringgold 33 – Laurel Highlands tied for first place in the Section 2-AAA meet at Thomas Jefferson.

Thomas Jefferson’s Sylvi Kashak easily took first place in 21:20.

Bella Baker of Laurel Highlands finished second in 22:32. Teammate Taylor Schwertfeger was fourth in 23:26. Maura Nagle was ninth in 25:49.

Ringgold’s Lily Brenneman finished third in 22:42. Teammate Sarah Palmer was 10th in 26:08.

Elizabeth Forward’s Lily Ash finished fifth in 24:11 and teammate Brooke Yurkovich was sixth in 25:14.

Belle Vernon 15, California 50 – The Lady Leopards had six runners in the top 10 for a Section 5-AA victory in California.

Lucia Meiss of the Lady Trojans finished first in 24:39.

Brooklyn Steeber (24:55), Lily Walsh (25:37), Bella Tatar (26:38), Claire Sokol (27:12), Heidi Beitler (26:05) and Gina Bellissimo (28:19) of Belle Vernon followed Meiss to the finish line.

California’s Ella Neil finished seventh in 29:48 and Ally Grodz was eighth in 39:36.

Calvary Chapel Christian School 15, South Allegheny 50 – Chelsea Glumac of CCCS was second in 34:45 and teammate Rosie Startare was third in 34:46. Leona D’Antonio was fifth in 35:46.

Greensburg CC 18, Brownsville 45; Brownsville 15, Serra Catholic 50; Greensburg CC 15, Serra Catholic 50 – The Lady Falcons won a game of a Section 5-AA home game.

Greensburg CC’s Ainsleigh Stickle won in 21:33 and teammate Shea House was second in 23:10.

Peyton Remington of Brownsville was sixth in 26:24. Payton Evanchak was ninth in 27:52.

West Greene 25, Chartiers-Houston 30; West Greene 15, Seton-La Salle 50, West Greene 15, Waynesburg Central 15, West Greene 15, Washington 50 – Eryka Hackney of the Lady Pioneers finished fourth with a time of 28:03 at a Section 3-AA meet in Chartiers-Houston.

Teammate Emily Stokes finished fifth in 28:57.

Golf for girls

Franklin Regional 175, Elizabeth Forward 178 – The Lady Panthers won a hard-fought Section 3-AAA home game at Murrysville Golf Course.

Mya Morgan won the gold medal for the Lady Warriors (9-1, 11-1) with a 2-under-par 37. She finished with two birdies and an eagle. Sydney Boyd (45), Annalise Didjunas (46) and Alizabeth Leezer (52) rounded out the scoring.

Mia Snyder was the top golfer at Franklin Regional (9-1, 10-2) with a 41.

Golf for boys

Mont Pleasant 214, Jeannette 264 – Ryan Karfelt shot 35-under-par to lead the Vikings to a Section 2-AA road victory at Greensburg Country Club.

Aydan Gross (47), Nico Pisula (42), Tannery Frye (44) and Darren Kinneer (46) completed the scoring for Mount Pleasant (7-3, 8-3).

Carmichaels 224, Bentworth 242 – Nathan Dursa, Connor Lapana and Jase Zdravecky all shot 44s in the Mikes’ Section 3-AA road victory at Chippewa Golf Course.

Zach Murphy shot 45 and Aydan Bate and Eli Hastings both finished with 47 for Carmichaels (6-3, 6-4).

Ross Skerbetz was the lowest man for the Bearcats (1-9, 1-11) with 44.

Charleroi 212, Uniontown 222 – The Cougars earned a non-section home victory at Mon Valley Country Club against the visiting Red Raiders.

Gage Patterson had a par of 36 for Charleroi (10-3). Jake Corrin (45), Kaden Woods (45), Levi Large (43) and Josh Chambers (44) completed the scoring.

Emily Myers was Uniontown’s lowest-scoring golfer with a 42. Trevor Uphold (44), Colton Mathias (43), Austin Thomas (46) and Brody Schiffbauer (47) rounded out the scoring.

Women’s volleyball

Laurel Highland 3, Belle Vernon 0 – Laurel Highlands returned home with a Section 3-AAA victory.

Laurel Highlands won 25-18, 26-24, 25-19.

Laurel Highlands was led by Jayna Fabrey (9 digs, 2 aces), Alexandra Mattey (7 digs, 7 kills, 3 blocks), Lucy Baker (8 digs, 3 kills), Sara Reed (10 assists, 2 digs), Ayrianna Sumpter (6 kills), Yelena Ford (7 assists) and Diondra Brown (2 digs, 2 kills, 3 blocks, 4 aces).

Thomas Jefferson 3, Uniontown 0 – The Lady Jaguars cruised past Uniontown for a Section 3-AAA road victory.

Uniontown’s top performers were Maggie Campbell (14 assists, 2 aces), Lexi Humberston (13 digs), Ryleigh Jose (7 kills, 3 digs, 2 blocks, 2 assists), Lyric McLee (4 kills, 4 digs), Ava Livingood (3 kills, 3 blocks), Lauren White (2 digs) and Layla Fitzgerald (2 kills).

Ringgold 3, Albert Gallatin 1 – The visiting Lady Rams beat Albert Gallatin in four sets for a Section 3-AAA victory.

Ringgold won 25-15, 28-30, 25-14, 25-13.

Mia Myers finished with 17 assists for the Lady Colonials. Leah Myers had 12 kills. Mya Glisan added three digs, five aces and seven kills.

Charleroi 3, Brownsville 0 – The Lady Cougars won a Section 3-AA away match in three sets.

Charleroi (2-1) won with a score of 25-17, 25-20, 25-23.

Payton Evanchak (10 assists, 12 service points, 4 aces), Skyler Gates (7 kills), Lydia Geary (5 kills) and Ashley Evanchak (26 digs) were the statistical leaders for the Lady Falcons (1-2, 1-4).

Waynesburg Central 3, Chartiers-Houston 0 – The Lady Raiders earned an away victory in Section 3-AA by scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-19.

Waynesburg Central (3-0, 4-0) was led by Emily Rafferty (12 kills), Ani Cree (7 kills, 6 digs), Railey Bochna (8 kills), Bailey Rafferty (18 assists, 4 digs, 3 aces), Gina Tedrow (7 assists, 6 aces, 4 digs) and Lelia McCollum (11 kills, 4 assists, 2 aces).

Bentworth 3, Washington 1 – The Lady Bearcats won the final two sets for a home victory in Section 3-AA.

Bentworth opened the match with a 27-25 win. Washington tied the match with a 26-24 win in the second set. The Lady Bearcats finished with wins of 26-24 and 25-18.

Zoie McDonald had 23 assists and six aces in the win. Nora Lindsey finished with nine kills and Olivia Telegraphis had a team-best 22 digs.

Beth Centre 3, Mapletown 0 – The Lady Bearcats topped Mapletown for a Section 3-A victory.

Beth-Center won 25-9, 25-14, 25-10. Mapletown falls to 0-1 in the section and 0-2 overall.

Carmichaels 3, Jefferson-Morgan 0 – Carmichaels earned a Section 3-A victory over the visiting Lady Rockets.

The Lady Mikes won the game with a score of 26-24, 25-12, 25-16.

Ashton Batis led Carmichaels with 23 digs. Pacey Pratt had a double-double with 16 digs and 10 kills. Bailey Barnyak finished with 14 digs and 13 kills. Avery Voithofer added 25 assists and four digs.

Frazier 3, Geibel Catholic 0 – The Lady Commodores were tough at home for a Section 4-A victory over the visiting Lady Gators.

Frazier (2-0, 3-2) won with scores of 25-9, 25-12 and 25-11.

Grace Vaughn led the Lady Commodores with 27 assists and nine kills. Allie Monack finished with 10 kills and Addison Day had 11 service points.

Boys Football

Bentworth 14, Chartiers-Houston 0 – Adam Moessner scored a hat trick and the Bearcats earned a Section 2-A victory over the Bucs.

Dillan Colbert, Cameron Butler and Billy Moyer each scored twice for Bentworth (2-0, 6-0). Austin Holler, Caden Hackison, Ryan Moessner, Aiden McMurray and Noah Reynolds each scored once.

DJ Hays and Issac Vipperman combined to achieve the shutout.

Greensburg CC 2, Beth-Centre 1 – The Centurions beat the Bulldogs for a Section 2-A victory.

Beth-Center is 0-1-0 in the section and 3-1-1 overall.

Southmoreland 2, Waynesburg Central 0 – Jack Ryan and Hunter Ryan scored for the Scotties in a Section 4-AA victory.

Southmoreland improves to 3-1 in the section and 5-2 overall. The Raiders slide to 0-3 in the section and 0-4 overall.

Mount Pleasant 2, Greensburg Salem 0 – Tyke Snyder scored in the first half and Jarett Garn added a second-half insurance goal for a Section 4-AA road victory.

Grayson Gardner preserved the shutout for Mount Pleasant (4-0, 5-1).
