Who needs the PS5 Pro's upgraded storage with SSD deals like this?

It struck me as a bit odd that Mark Cerny, while telling us about the upcoming PS5 Pro’s performance upgrades, forgot to mention that it will house an upgraded 2TB SSD inside. That extra storage space might help justify the console’s price, but it doesn’t make much sense to me as a selling point. The PS5 has had an extra SSD port since launch, and one of the console’s best features has been the ability to expand its storage with drives that are actually faster than Sony’s custom SSD.

If the PS5 Pro price tag is out of reach for you, upgrading your current PS5’s storage is probably the best way to improve your gaming quality of life without breaking the bank. Take this Corsair MP600 Elite 1TB SSD, for example. It’s currently marked down from $94.99 to $100. $84.99 on Amazonand its integrated heat sink means that its installation will require very little effort.

A $10 price cut isn’t exactly huge, but for one of the best-performing drives I’ve ever tested for PS5, it’s a great price to pay. The best PS5 SSDs have gotten a lot more expensive in the last year, and you’re lucky if you can find a PS5-compatible option for under $90 — even if it came out in 2022. This deal on Amazon brings an SSD made by a premium brand down to the price that budget brands charge, so I can’t express how great a deal this is.

I test SSDs for a living, and so far this is my favorite PS5 SSD coming out in 2024. It takes the benefits of the previous Corsair MP600 drives and takes them to new heights, with faster read and write speeds and a beautiful design.

In fact, the integrated heatsink design is one of the reasons I’d say it stands out from the rest of the PS5 SSD lineup. There’s a breathing space between this drive’s heatsink and its bottom, meaning more airflow can help keep it cool on both sides, something other drives neglect.

What might surprise you is that this SSD actually boasts faster read and write speeds than the PS5’s internal drive, with sequential read and write speeds of 7,038MB/s and 6,500MB/s in our tests. That means if you transfer your games to this drive, they’ll actually load slightly faster than they would from the console’s built-in storage. To be fair, the PS5 isn’t able to divert power to the secondary M.2 bay in the same way a gaming PC can, but that doesn’t stop some of the best SSDs for gaming from producing brilliant load times.

I don’t need to tell you that boosting your PS5’s storage for just $84 will save you a ton of money compared to buying an entire PS5 Pro. Personally, my PS5 runs games exactly as I want, and I’ve never seen it struggle to run games in 4K because the console’s ports need to be stable to pass Sony’s certification process. I haven’t gotten my hands on the PS5 Pro yet to really test its performance improvements, but for now, I know which upgrade path I’d recommend.
