State Police Investigate Road Rage Incident on NB I-75 in Southgate

Michigan State Police are investigating a possible shooting reported Wednesday on Interstate 75 in Southgate, authorities said.

A motorist called police around 10 p.m. to report a road rage incident on northbound I-75 near Northline Road, MSP reported. Officers went to the victim’s home for an interview.

According to a preliminary investigation, the victim was driving northbound on I-75 when the incident began. The victim and another motorist, driving an older model Chevrolet, got into an argument, police said.

According to MSP, the driver of the Chevrolet allegedly threw a cup of liquid on the victim’s windshield. The victim then pulled up next to the other driver’s vehicle and gestured toward him, authorities said.

Police said the victim told them he saw the driver of the Chevrolet roll down the passenger side window of his vehicle and shoot at him. He also said he thought he heard gunshots but did not see any flashes of fire, investigators said. Police said they found no damage to the victim’s vehicle.

Police closed the area of the highway where the incident allegedly took place to search for evidence, but none was found.

“It is important to remember that anyone who has lost control of their vehicle cannot be reasoned with,” Michigan State Police spokesman Lt. Mike Shaw said in a statement. “Do not make eye contact. Do not wave or make any gestures. If possible, slow down and let them pass you and call 911 if they continue their reckless behavior.”

Anyone with information about the incident or the suspect should call Michigan State Police at (855) MICH-TIP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

The incident is the latest case of road rage that authorities have investigated in recent months.

Last month, state police said they were investigating a shooting on Interstate 696 near Evergreen Road in Southfield that may have started as a road rage incident.

In late July, police investigated a report of shots fired after two motorists got into an argument on Interstate 75 near Outer Drive in Detroit.

The previous week, road rage sparked a shooting on Interstate 94 west of M-52 in Sylvan Township, according to MSP.
