Gwyneth Paltrow is dealing with a lot of changes in her life. Less than two weeks ago, her son Moses started his freshman year at Brown University, while her stepson Brody also just left for undergrad, leaving her kids and husband Brad Falchuk childless. Not to mention, it was just announced in late August that Paltrow will be making her big film comeback, landing her first non-cameo/voice role in five years with A24 Marty Supremealso starring Timothée Chalamet.

But even though it’s a transitional period for Paltrow, she still looks as calm and glamorous as ever when we catch up with her at a Boucheron party during New York Fashion Week.

Titled “From Paris to New York: A Pioneering Journey Since 1858,” the event celebrates the house’s arrival in the Big Apple, with 166 years of history behind it. Paltrow, a fan of the brand, shines in her edition quatre radiant tie necklace and double white lunar rings, which she pairs with a plunging little black dress and black heeled sandals by Roger Vivier.

“I’ve always had a soft spot for old French brands,” she says as we sit on a bench in the picturesque garden of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. “I think there’s always something inherently aspirational about these brands that have been around for all these years. And the quality is so beautiful.”

Paltrow, who runs a major company herself, is also attracted to another aspect of Boucheron: “Today, of course, they have both a female artistic director and a global CEO,” she says. “(Which is) very rare.”

Over her many decades in the spotlight, first as a Hollywood star and now as a lifestyle industry leader with Goop, Paltrow’s personal taste has always leaned toward understated luxury. She describes her style as “minimal, elegant, preppy,” and you can see it in her most iconic looks, from her pink Ralph Lauren Oscars gown to the Kelly green ensemble she wore Great expectations. But despite the fact that her style relies on subtlety, Paltrow isn’t afraid of a good statement piece.

“I have two choices,” she says when I ask her about her accessorizing rules. “I tend to go for solid gold, daytime pieces, or… I don’t mind wearing a really big statement piece either.” She then gestures to her white gold necklace, which is shaped like a bolo tie and is adorned with sparkling princess and baguette diamonds. In a surprising twist, Paltrow decides to wear the piece upside down, with the rounded part resting on the front like a choker, while the tail cascades down her bare back. It reads: “I’m beautiful, don’t talk to me.”

Still, talking to Paltrow comes quite naturally, and when the conversation moves away from jewelry and fashion, she opens up about more personal things in her life, like the difficulty of not having children at home.

“It’s very different, I think I’m still a little bit in shock,” she says. “I’m trying to open up to this new migration model that we can have. And they’re all very happy, that’s the most you can ask for. When I start to feel sad, I talk to them and they’re so happy that it’s like relief and happiness come over me too.”

She adds: “It’s a really important moment, you know. It’s like the end of a chapter in a certain way of parenting. It’s like you’re embarking on a new relationship, in a way.”

But even though her children no longer live with her, they are still at the center of her world and have a huge impact on Paltrow’s life. Just a few weeks ago, news broke that the actor’s daughter, Apple, had convinced her mother to take the role in Marty Supremebecause of her obsession with Chalamet. In our conversation, Paltrow notes that it was also partly the influence of her brother Jake, who is a big fan of the film’s director, Josh Safdie.

When I ask her if she misses acting, Paltrow is very candid. “Not really,” she says with a smile. But as for whether this might mark a continued return to the medium, her answer leaves me a little more hopeful: “I am I can’t wait to get back to it and really try it, see how it feels. And then I’ll let you know.
