Broncos coach Sean Payton sends message to Steelers’ Justin Fields: ‘Like a running back’

Sean Payton has no intention of letting Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields beat them on the ground. The Broncos head coach said he respects Fields’ ability on the ground and said the Broncos, a week after giving up 146 rushing yards to the Seattle Seahawks, need to do a better job defending the run this week.

Fields will present a unique challenge in the Steelers’ game plan, which is to run the ball and control it throughout the game. They did that successfully against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1, with 36 minutes of possession thanks to success on the ground. That efficient attack, coupled with some explosive plays through the air, was more than enough to win the game. However, Payton says the Broncos will treat Fields like a running back while they defend him.

“We have to make sure we adapt to that the right way. We have to build on the things we’ve done well, and then obviously we’re playing someone this week who’s very mobile. So I think when we talk about defending the run, that includes the quarterback this week, like a running back.

Fields had 14 carries for 57 yards against the Falcons in Week 1, but he’s done a lot more damage on the ground in the past. The Steelers and Fields both failed to score in Week 1, but there will be opportunities, especially with new right tackle Troy Fautanu expected to start.
