“We are resilient,” Smart said. “Two years ago, we went to Missouriand we almost lost that game that night, on the road. Played at Auburn Last year, the first game of the year, away, we almost lost that game. So you have to find ways to win those games and that’s what we did, we found a way to win. The best news is we can wake these guys up and get better. Because the first thing we have to do is get better.

McGrath also spoke to the quarterback Carson Beckwho joked that the Bulldogs were lucky to have a bye week, especially with Alabama on the other side. And if Smart felt like some of his players hadn’t absorbed the message all week, Beck certainly had.

“Thank God we have a week off, that’s all I have to say,” Beck said with a laugh. “No, Kentucky is a physical game and we knew we were going to come into this game and it was going to be physical, so we have the utmost respect for them and we knew this game was going to be like that. The first road game, it’s always going to be a tough test. You go back and we talked about it earlier in the week, you look at our first road games the last two years, it’s kind of like that. So we came in here hoping to go blow for blow and just trying to come away with a win, so I’m really proud of the guys.”
