A Detroit man has been charged with charges related to a shooting stemming from a two-week-old road rage incident in Roseville, police said Friday.

Carlos Emanuel Hernandez-Acosta, 37, was arraigned in 39th District Court on charges of assault with intent to murder and other crimes. Judge Teddy Metry set bail at $80,000 cash/surety.

If convicted, Hernandez-Acosta faces life in prison for assault.

Police say a motorist was shot following an early morning encounter in the area of 11 Mile and Hayes roads on Aug. 30. The victim was treated and released from the hospital that day, police said.

“Officers learned that an unknown individual fired multiple shots at another motorist, striking him once,” Police Chief Mitch Berlin said in a news release.

The victim told police he was involved in a road rage incident, which began near eastbound Highway 94 Nine Mile Road when one driver cut the other off. The suspect allegedly fired the first shot and continued to follow the victim.

Investigators said the targeted driver exited Interstate 696 at Groesbeck Highway, with the suspect pulling up next to him and firing multiple more shots before driving away.

According to the statement, investigators began investigating the case with only a vague description of the suspect vehicle. Using FLOCK technology, a license plate reading device, they were able to identify the suspect vehicle.

Detectives searched the area of 12 Mile and Groesbeck, where they had learned the suspect vehicle frequented, and located one of the vehicles registered to the suspect vehicle parked at a business in the area of 12 Mile and Calahan Road.

Police arrested Hernandez-Acosta without incident Thursday at his workplace. He was taken to the Macomb County Jail, where he is currently being held.

Roseville investigators obtained additional information and executed a search warrant at a Detroit residence. They seized several firearms, body armor and the suspect vehicle, which was covered and hidden in a garage at the residence, the release said.

In addition to the assault charge, Hernandez-Acosta was charged with malicious destruction of property, tampering with evidence and two counts of carrying a firearm. He also faces 90 counts of reckless use of a firearm.
