Pittsburgh Steelers’ massive tight end scores first career TD against Broncos

DENVER — Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Darnell Washington scored his first career touchdown against the Denver Broncos on Sunday. On third down and goal, Steelers quarterback Justin Fields threw a fade to Washington, who beat Broncos safety P.J. Locke for a five-yard touchdown.

Locke is only 6’3″ to Washington’s 6’3″, so the Steelers took advantage of the size advantage in the red zone and exploited it. Washington is listed at 280 pounds, but he could very well be bigger than that.

The Steelers’ touchdown drive lasted 12 plays and 78 yards and took up 7 minutes, 31 seconds on the clock in the first quarter. For offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and the Steelers, it’s a continuation of what happened in Week 1 when the Steelers owned the ball for more than 36 minutes in their 18-10 win at Atlanta.

Washington caught just seven passes in his rookie season. He had one reception for five yards against the Falcons. The sophomore Georgia product played the most games among Steelers tight ends last week with 48 snaps.
