Biden says he is relieved that Trump is unharmed after second assassination attempt

President Joe Biden responded Sunday to the second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, saying he was “relieved that the former president is unharmed.”

In a statement, Biden expressed relief that Trump was unharmed in the shooting at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, while praising the Secret Service for its efforts to protect the former president.

“I have been briefed by my team that federal law enforcement is investigating a possible assassination attempt on former President Trump today. A suspect is in custody, and I commend the work of the Secret Service and their law enforcement partners for their vigilance and efforts to ensure the safety of the former President and his entourage. I am relieved that the former President is unharmed. An investigation into this incident is ongoing as law enforcement gathers more details about what happened,” he said.

Biden also denounced any political violence of any kind and said he “continues to ensure” that the Secret Service is well equipped to protect Trump.

“As I have said repeatedly, there is no place for political violence or any other violence in our country, and I have directed my team to continue to ensure that the Secret Service has all the resources, capabilities, and safeguards necessary to ensure the continued safety of the former president,” he added.

The statement comes after Secret Service officers opened fire on a man hiding behind a fence near one of the golf course’s holes after spotting the barrel of a gun going through it. A witness who spotted someone fleeing the scene in a black Nissan was able to take a photo of the car and its license plate, and authorities arrested the suspect shortly after. The suspect has been identified as Ryan Wesley Routh.

At a press conference after the incident, Palm Beach Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said there were about “400 to 500 yards” separating the suspect and Trump when the Secret Service located the suspect.
